Article Image Alt Text

BY TORY DUNCAN

The season for the Sutton Fillies and Sandy Creek Cougars came to a close Monday night for both teams in action at the C2-3 Sub-District tournament, hosted by Adams Central High School, west of Hastings.

Sutton, however, would rebound from a three set loss to Sandy Creek just a week ago, as the Fillies, before a straight sets, 25-9, 25-14, 25-21 loss to second ranked and top seed Superior, would avenge a 25-23, 20-25, 17-25 loss to the Cougars on Oct. 23 and take down the Cougars 25-16, 25-15, 19-25, 25-21, to advance to the bout with Superior Monday night.

Mustang defense plays big

Sutton improves to 9-1 with 22-7 win over Battle Creek in C-2 opener

BY TORY DUNCAN

It didn’t take long to figure out that the opening round of the Class C-2 state football playoffs was going to be an old fashion battle out by the woodshed when the 14th seed, Battle Creek Braves, showed up to challenge third seeded Sutton Oct. 26.

Sutton’s defense would be the difference maker in a 22-7 win over the Braves, as three interceptions to stop three strong Battle Creek drives by Cade Wiseman, Dusty Stone and Jordan Davis, along with a monster night from the Mustang defensive line and line-backing group, held the Braves to a mere 99 rushing yards and 87 passing yards in the Mustangs 15-point win.

Harvard rolls up 325 all-purpose yards during seventh win, Ben Okraska paces offensive power

BY ASHLEY D. SWANSON

Unstoppable is easily one of the best words to describe the Harvard football team. The Cardinals rose to 7-0 on the season following Friday’s homecoming game against the Silver Lake Mustangs; Harvard won 79-8.

It was evident that the Cardinals wanted control of the game, as the team posted 38 points on the scoreboard by the end of the first quarter, via touchdowns by juniors David Rezola and Noah Okraska, and seniors Cory Marshall and Hunter Wilkerson.

Sutton shoots down Stars 36-0

Mustangs record fourth shutout of season at Class C-1 Kearney Catholic

BY TORY DUNCAN

It’s no secret that defense has been a strong suit for the Sutton Mustangs this season, as the Mustangs recorded their fourth shutout win of the 2018 campaign. Sutton traveled to Kearney Catholic High School Sept. 28, and handed the Class C-1 Stars a 36-0 thumping to improve to 5-1 on the season.

It proved to be the first shutout loss for the Stars since a 42-0 blanking at Hastings St. Cecilia on Sept. 3, 2010.

Sutton held Kearney Catholic to a mere 135 yards of total offense, while the Mustang offense scorched the Stars for 455 total yards in the win.

Starting quarterback Jackson Perrien sliced up the Kearney Catholic defense on a 36-yard touchdown sprint with 7 minutes to go to lift Sutton to an 8-0 lead, following a Brett Simonsen twopoint conversion run in the first quarter.

Top ranked Cardinals blitz Red Hornets on the road

Article Image Alt Text

BY JORDYN HULINSKY

The Harvard Cardinals improved their record to 5-0 on the season with an 82-32 victory over Heartland Lutheran Friday evening, but this time with a different game.

The team, known for its rushing efforts, changed things up to show off the passing game this week. “So far this season, we’ve been running the ball a lot and we’ve found a groove that way,” Head Coach Scott Trimble said. “This week we wanted to come out and show our throwing to give that game some reps. We want to give other teams more to think about when they think of us.”

The Cards completed 8 of 10 passes for 176 yards against Heartland Lutheran, but added an additional 279 yards of rushing on 27 carries.
