Consumers hoping a couple of recent policy proposals might lower prices for their prescription drugs may be out of luck, at least for now.

Earlier this year the Trump administration had proposed a rule that would have required prescription drug manufacturers to disclose list prices for drugs advertised on TV. Drug makers would have had to tell the public the list price of a 30-day supply of any drugs covered under the Medicare and Medicaid programs that cost at least $35 a month.

Some experts argued the rule would not have been very effective because consumers often don’t pay the list price anyway. Discounts and rebates negotiated by pharmacy benefit managers reduce the price, although some insurers may require people with high deductible plans to pay the list price until they meet their deductible.

Just a week ago, Vacation Bible School at Manna Camp near Spring Ranch, was under water. Although the cabins are built on stilts, the rise in the Little Blue River which the camp is situated right alongside of, caused camp goers to leave for a few days until the water receded. Camp resumed Sunday, July 14, continuing with group activities and fun as before the flooding began. The camp previously flooded in 1993 and in 2000, when water levels reached only a foot below the cabins. Below, flood waters reach the swings on the swing set. The camp hosts several options for youth, including two kid’s camps, a junior high camp, and a senior high camp. Kids work in group sessions, swim in the pond, and go boating, to name a few items.

The Clay County Health Department has released reports for the fiscal year 2018-19.

The nursing staff made 586 patient visits (skilled nurse and aide) during the year. Recorded time spent was 419.67 hours at nursing visits and 426.92 hours at aide visits.

An additional 112 visits (home health nurse, aide and hospice aide) patient visits were made for Mary Lanning Home Health and Hospice. The total number of visits made by the nursing staff was 698.

Immunizaions-91 children received 199 various vaccinations through the Vaccines for Children program. The Adult Immunization Program administered 11 vaccinations to qualifying adults.

In the past fiscal year, 424 influenza vaccinations were administered at flu clinics, county sites, and county businesses and during home visits. Fifty-four adult immunizations were given in the clinic setting: Hep. A=3, Hep. B=7, Tdap=4, Shingrix (Shingles)=38, Typhoid=2.

The Clay County Health Department is announcing the retirement of Ellie Clark. An open house is planned for July 24, from 2-5 p.m., at the downtown Senior Center in Clay Center. 118 S. Alexander St.

Bryant and Jean (Driewer) Meadows of York would like to announce the birth of their first child, Myla Jean. Myla was born at 1:50 p.m. on July 10, 2019, at the Henderson Healthcare Services Hospital in Henderson. She weighed 7 lbs, 12 oz and was 19 inches long.

Grandparents are Janet Driewer of Hampton and Mike and Raylene Meadows of Trumbull.

Great grandparents are Evelyn Driewer of York; Sinobia Griess of Sutton; and Corrine Meadows of Hastings.

Recently I downloaded the 10/11 app for my phone (that’s not social media, so it doesn’t go against my goal there). I’ve been kind of out of the loop for what’s been going on outside our county newswise, so I figured I should probably get in tune with our surroundings.

Well, first off, there’s a ridiculous amount of car accidents occurring. And a lot of them are resulting in deaths.

Maybe they were the result of someone not paying attention, or exceeding speeds set, or just anything else, but honestly, there are way too many happening that I feel could have been avoided.

Example, there was one accident that happened because the person drove, or tried to drive, through flood waters. They died. I’m sorry to the family for the loss of their family member, but one of the many items the state patrol stresses about safe driving is “turn around, don’t drown.”

Harvard’s 14th annual Veterans Memorial Car Show has been set for Saturday, July 27.

The car show portion of the day will go from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at the City Park (505 East Walnut), with registration from 10 a.m.-noon; entry fee is $15.

Trophies will be presented at 3 p.m.; there will be prize drawings throughout the car show. All proceeds will go to the Harvard Veterans Memorial Wall, and food onsite will be sponsored by the United Church of Christ.

Additional activities Saturday will include the UCC 5k/one mile run/walk, which starts at the city park at 8 a.m.; entry fee is $10 and all proceeds will go to the People Project.

The 11th annual horse shoe tournament will be hosted east of the car show. Sign-up is 10 to 11 a.m. and cost is $10 per person, with a top four payout.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m.; all participants should start lining up at the school by 9 a.m. Call Bonnie at 402-984-6540 for any questions.
