Co. Board hears update on solar zoning progress

Despite the pandemic, a three-member zoning committee has continued discussions on how best to write solar-specific zoning rules for Clay County.

Zoning Administrator Barb Barnett gave an update during the Clay County Board of Supervisors’ regular meeting on June 23 at the Clay County Fairgrounds in Clay Center.

VA-based APEX Clean Energy has proposed a 305-megawatt solar project to be placed on approximately 3,000 acres in the Spring Ranch area. County solar zoning rules are among the necessities for this project to begin.

Meyer shared that he noticed an unusual vehicle parked in the Nelson 4x4 auto dealership directly east of George’s 66 Station. Meyer noted that as he turned his vehicle the suspect vehicle made a right onto Maltby Ave.

Meyer, in turn, turned his cruiser to head northbound on Maltby Ave., to come up behind the suspect vehicle, which was traveling at a speed higher than the posted limit.

Meyer activated his radar and clocked the vehicle, a gray Nissan Maxima, traveling at 35 miles per hour in a 25 mph speed zone.

Harvard Rest Haven is a 4-star facility

Harvard Rest Haven is a 4-star facility

Harvard Rest Haven has received a fourstar rating, following an October 2019 report done by the State of Nebraska, as reported on the U.S. government Medicare site.

The four-star rating matches up with the previous year’s rating, which didn’t come as a surprise to HRH Administrator Ruth Sands-Jerke or staff.

“We have been pleased that we’re doing so well,” Sands-Jerke said. “We have a very good and very caring staff…the main reason they’re here is to care for the residents and they’re dedicated in what they’re doing.”

Finding those dedicated staff members hasn’t been an issue either, she said, added how being located in a small town and being a smaller facility allows more personal attention and care to their residents.

Clay Co. moves into Phase 3 of DHM

On June 22, Nebraska counties moved into Phase III of the Directed Health Measure changes, according to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

The new guidelines relaxed on sports attendance, elective surgeries, and include changes to gatherings at local bars and restaurants and at weddings/funerals, among other updates.

Statewide changes for all 93 counties included fan attendance for youth and school games to the same limit as gatherings—75 percent of rated occupancy not to exceed 10,000—and will no longer be limited to only household members.

Contact team sports are also allowed to begin practices and host games on July 1.
