Hospital continues to work closely with local healthcare entities, area schools and state agencies regarding

COVID-19 (coronavirus disease). At this time, there is no immediate risk present in the communities we serve.

We continue to be proactive with all measures in keeping our patients and employees safe. Although we know

there are many questions and concerns from the general public, please understand that we will continue to

update you with the latest and most pertinent information as it becomes available.

If you have recently traveled to a known infected area outside of the United States, any communities with

current outbreaks, or had exposure to someone who has COVID-19, and are now experiencing fever and/or

symptoms of acute respiratory illness (e.g., cough, difficulty breathing), please CALL your primary care

Members of the Sutton City Council in light discussion Monday night approved the Mustang Restaurant and Lounge as an additional Sutton Keno vendor to open their monthly meeting.

The Mustang Restaurant and Lounge will soon become the third site within Sutton to be a Keno vendor, along with the Sutton American Legion and Maury’s Place.

Michael Nevrivy shared with council members it is hoped that Keno will be available to patrons of the Mustang Restaurant and Lounge in late March.

“You are the knights in shining armor at 2 a.m. when that baby can’t breath...When grandma falls and breaks her hip and needs help. When grandpa trips on the steps and he is cut and needs someone to put a bandage on and taken to the hospital of his choice, you guys are the ones that do that,” Clay County Emergency Manager Tim Lewis said during the annual Edgar Fire and Rescue Banquet Saturday, March 7.

Lewis gave many thanks to the departments for their continued efforts within their community and assisting in others, alluding to events such as a Sedan grain bin fire—lasting from Dec. 22, 2019 to mid-January—and helping a family in Harvard following a house fire. According to EMT Chief Brad Brennfoerder, Edgar’s Fire and Rescue put in 527 hours working on the Sedan fire.

A series of criminal activities kept Sutton Police officers busy, beginning with a house search warrant Wednesday, March 4.

The search conducted by Sutton officer Mitch Meyer resulted in the arrest of Deanthaney Pennington, of Sutton. Along with smaller offenses, Pennington will be charged with six counts of a felon in possession of weapons by a prohibited person.

Secured at Pennington’s residence was methamphetamine; marijuana; pipes; a scale; a .25 caliber larson, which was reported stolen from Texas in 2007; 12 fully-loaded 30 round 5.56 mags for an AR-15; two loaded .22 caliber rifles; a tactical shotgun with double 00 buck shells; a 50-round drum mag; 9 mm handgun, which was found loaded under the suspect’s bed; a 357 gun; several boxes of ammo; and a flail, which is a weapon with a spiked ball striking head attached to a handle by chains.

Pennington is currently in jail as of Monday on a 10 percent of a $300,000 bond ($30,000).

With the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, this message becomes more and more important every day.

On March 6, Nebraska joined 35 other states in reporting a COVID-19 case, with the addition of two more cases announced March 7—family members of the first confirmed Nebraska case.

COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control, is thought to be spread from person-to-person through respiratory droplets; droplets can come from sneezing and coughing. These droplets can land in a person’s mouth or nose, which are then breathed into the lungs.

The name Laurel Stoehr will ring a bell to many Sutton Fillies basketball fans. Stoehr helped lead the Sutton girls basketball program to their only state girls championship in 1991, the year in which Stoehr, the daughter of Mick and Linda, who reside in Sutton, graduated from SPS.

Stoehr, who now is know as Laurel O’Malley, a second grade teacher at Chambers Public Schools, will lead the Chambers/Wheeler Central Renegade girls basketball team into the 2020 Class D-1 state tournament as the second seed overall in the class, as her Renegades carry a 25-1 record into the tournament, which begins Thursday in Lincoln.

The Renegades will take on seventh seed Dundy County-Stratton at 2 p.m. at Lincoln Southwest High School. The lone loss on the year for O’Malley, whose husband, Chuck, serves as the teams assistant coach, is a 41-36 loss to North Central, a class C-2 team in the Niobrara Valley Conference Tournament, back on Feb. 8.

“I remember sitting in the locker room, talking to the guys who were going to be on the team the next year and I told them ‘I can’t promise you that you’ll win anything, I can just promise you the opportunity and that it’s going to take a lot of hard work, it’s going to take dedication, it’s going to take everything you’ve given to this program so far to be successful in six-man,” Harvard Football Head Coach Scott Trimble said during the championship ring ceremony Sunday.

Between 2004-15, Harvard football had a record of 18-78, appearing in the playoffs once, in 2004.

“That time frame was a tough time for Harvard football,” Trimble said.

Originating in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, the coronavirus is constantly evolving.

The virus (COVID-19) is a respiratory disease and has “been detected in 60 locations internationally, including cases in the United States,” according to an update from the Centers For Disease Control (CDC) on Feb. 29.

With this rapidly changing disease health officials are keeping a heavy eye on the activity occurring, including the South Heartland District Health Department and local county emergency managers.

Michele Bever, executive director for SHDHD, said “it’s an ever-changing scenario... we look at previous outbreaks and learn from those to be prepared and keep the public safe.”

Mary Lanning Healthcare and the Hastings Fire Department teamed up to recognize a group of area volunteer emergency medical providers.

Members of the Clay County Basic Life Support (BLS) crew were honored at Mary Lanning Monday. Heather Peterson, RN, MLH Trauma Coordinator, said Jake Veik, Jeff Switzer, Jim Piper, Vally Robinson-McDonald and Haley Roemmich were honored for their hard work and quick actions.

Peterson, who provides training for emergency medical providers in the community, said the state of Nebraska opened up some advanced education— for performing advanced airways, using IVs and administering the drug NARCAN®—in 2019. NAR-CAN® (naloxone) is used to treat a narcotic overdose in emergencies.
