Robert Laschanzky

Robert Lee Laschanzky of Cortland, passed away Aug. 18, 2022, in Lincoln at the age of 84. Robert was born April 7, 1938, to Harry and Ruth (VanPatton) Laschanzky, at their home in Grafton, where he would grow up and attend Grafton Public School. Robert graduated from Grafton Public High School in 1955 and enlisted in the United States Navy. His time in the Navy was spent stationed at Pearl Harbor aboard the U.S.S. Jenkins where he served three tours to the Far East. After discharging from the Navy, he returned to Grafton and enrolled at Hastings College.

Robert married Kay Suzann Unterseher, also of Grafton, Feb. 14, 1962. They would be blessed with three boys, Robert Wayne, David Lee and Jeremy Scott.

Karen Ann Bauman, 76, of Fairfield, entered into eternal life on Aug. 27, 2022, at her home. Funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m.,Saturday, Sept. 3, at Peace Lutheran Church in Hastings, with Pastor Micah Gaunt officiating. The Committal Service will precede the funeral at St. Paul’s Lutheran Churchyard Cemetery, rural Glenvil, beginning at 10 a.m. Visitation will be at Butler Volland Funeral Home on Friday, Sept. 2, from 1- 7 p.m., with family present from 5-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Peace Lutheran Church. Karen was born on Aug. 17, 1946, in Hastings, the daughter of George and Helen (Janssen) Bohlen. She attended Adams County District 40 Grade School and graduated from Hastings High School in 1964.

Sutton resident Dean A. Kissler, 89, passed away Friday, Aug. 26, 2022, at his home in Sutton. A Rosary will be prayed at 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 2, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sutton. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m., with Father Doug Daro officiating. Private inurnment will be held at the Swan Valley Cemetery near Swanton. In honoring his wish to be cremated there will not be a visitation or viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sutton. Condolences may be left at www. suttonmemorial.com Dean was born June 20, 1933, in Sutton to Andrew and Florence (Volz) Kissler. He received his early education at country school and graduated from Sutton High School in 1950. Dean enlisted in the U.S. Army on Nov. 3, 1953, and served until he was honorably discharged on Oct. 25, 1955. In February 1963, he was united in marriage to Marietta Jirka. Dean was a lifelong farmer in Clay County.

Former Grafton resident Pauly Griess, 97, passed away Saturday, Aug. 20, 2022, at the Sutton Community Home in Sutton. Funeral services took place at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2022, at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton, with the Free German Reformed Salem Church Elders officiating. Interment followed at the Free German Reformed Salem Church Cemetery near Sutton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Sutton Community Home. Pauly was born May 22, 1925, to Daniel and Eleonora (Huber) Griess in Fillmore County, Nebraska.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Free German Reformed Salem Church. He received his education in Fillmore County School District No. 8.

Pauly was united in marriage to Johanna Griess March 8, 1945. To this union, five children were born.

Dr. Sherrill Eldren Echternkamp

Dr. Sherrill Eldren Echternkamp, 79, of Lincoln passed away peacefully Aug. 11, 2022. He was comforted by his wife, children and grandchildren. Sherrill was born in Columbus, IL to Eldren and Eleanor Echternkamp. He graduated from Southern Illinois Univ., Ohio State Univ., and Cornell Univ. He was a physiologist for the USDA for 40 years. He and his wife, Lynn, raised their children, Renee and Eldren, in Clay Center and volunteered in the community. He enjoyed restoring antique and vintage Fords. Sherrill is survived by his wife, Lynn; his son, Eldren and his wife, Elizabeth and their children, Kennedy, Ethan and Keagan of Hickman; and his daughter, Renee, and her husband, Ty, and their children, Lake and Kylan of Spokane, Wa.

Services were at 10 a.m Monday, August 15. at Sheridan Lutheran Church in Lincoln. He was laid to rest in the Clay Center cemetery.

Memorials may be given to Down Syndrome Association of Nebraska.

Engel Aug. 22, 1957; he preceded her in death on April 28, 2021. She was a secretary for Insurance Plus Inc. Sharon was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Glenvil.

Olena Alikina Koehler of Greensboro, NC passed away July 21, 2022, at the age of 45. Olena was born to Alexsey and Galena Alikina on June 5, 1977 in Nikolaev, Ukraine. Memorial servives will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the United Church of Christ in Harvard, with pastor Dave Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Harvard cemetery following the service. She is survived by her husband, Daniel Koehler; daughters Sasha, Sophia, and step-daughter Hannah; her mother and father and a host of relatives and friends around the world.

Hastings resident Raymond L. Horacek, 83, passed away Sunday, June 19, 2022, at Mary Lanning Healthcare, Hastings.

Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home & Cremation Center is serving the family. Raymond was born July 31, 1938 in Fairfield to Edward R. and Sarah L. (Brubeck) Horacek. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1956. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy where he was an Engineman on the USS Avenge, MSO-423. Raymond married Mildred Gruntorad Aug. 1, 1960, in Deweese; they had four children. They amicably divorced in 1968.

Raymond then married Patricia Carter July 16, 1977. Patricia preceded him in death March 3, 1997.

Raymond loved to fish, hunt, ride his motorcycle, and fly remote airplanes. While indoors he enjoyed watching sports and western movies.

Ronald Frerichs

Ronald E. Frerichs, 84, of Beatrice passed away on Wed., Aug. 3, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family. Ron was born Jan. 5, 1938, in Beatrice and was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice. He graduated from Beatrice High School in 1956 and then attended the University of Nebraska for one year. He then went on to telegraphy school in Pueblo, CO and Fort Worth, TX to serve an apprenticeship for the railroad. Ron married Jeanne Everett on Feb. 14, 1960, in Beatrice. He worked at Henry’s Bowl in Beatrice for over 30 years as a Brunswick mechanic. In 1988- 89, Ron was inducted into the Beatrice Men’s Bowlers Association Hall of Fame. He lived most of his life in Beatrice until 1988 when they moved to Sutton to purchase Clay Bowl. They resided in Sutton for 14 years. Ron retired in 2002 and he and Jeanne traveled in their motorhome around the United States for two and a half years. In 2006 they purchased and lived in a cabin at Lovewell State Park near Webber, KS.
