For the second straight year, South Central’s Brayton Jarosik, a junior at Sandy Creek High School, will make his way to the Nebraska State Cross Country championships, after qualifying for the big show with a sixth-place finish at the C-3 District meet, Thursday, Oct. 17, at Aurora’s Streeter Park.

The Sutton Fillies bounced back in a strong way following an early week loss to state ranked Thayer Central, as the Fillies surpassed their win total from a year ago, improving to 10-11 with a pair of three-set wins over David City and Fairbury at home Thursday, Oct. 10.

David City earned a first set win over the Fillies to open the triangular, beating Sutton 25-23, before the Fillies bounced back to gain wins of 25-17, 25-13 to take the match.

Sophomore Reagan Vavricek led the hitting attack with 14 kills. Junior Kylie Baumert added nine, while senior Lydia Rogers added eight.

After a scoring threat early in the first quarter by the Sandy Creek Cougars, following a quick 8-0 lead by the Sutton Mustangs, that left Sandy Creek just short of answering the Mustangs’ opening kickoff, Sutton ran past the Cougars in a C2-5 district clash in Sutton this past Friday night.

Sutton used a 22-0 first quarter run and an 18-0 run in the second frame to race out to a 40-0 halftime lead and move closer and closer to their 10th straight Class C-2 state football playoff appearance, with the C2-5 district title, with a 52-7 win over the Cougars.

Sutton’s offensive attack was led by it’s powerful rushing attack, as the Mustangs outgained the Cougars 339-105 on the ground, while Sandy Creek held a slight edge in the passing game, holding a 99-63 yard edge through the air.

Deweese’s Roman Skalka edged out threetime winner, Kevin Perrien of Sutton in a tough set of Pigskin Picks during week-6 of the Clay County News gridiron contest.

Both Skalka and Perrien missed two games, with Skalka missing the Columbus Scotus win over Bishop Neuman and the Kearney Catholic win over Sutton, while Perrien missed the Florida win over Auburn and the KCHS and Sutton game.

Skalka predicted that the KCHS and Sutton game would produce 48 points, when in fact, the game produced 41 points. Perrien guessed that 52 points would be scored.

Sutton’s Amy Skalka edged out three other contestants that missed three games for the third place spot. Missing three with Skalka were Jon Ladehoff, Jess Hinrichs and David Yost.

The Nebraska School Activities Association has announced the new wrestling districts for the upcoming season, with all three Clay County teams heading in different directions for the 2019-20 season.

Sutton will be headed to Oakland-Craig High School in Oakland for the C-3 District meet, while South Central’s Red Raiders will travel to St. Paul High School for action in the C-2 District meet, with Harvard heading southwest to Southern Valley High School, south of Oxford, for the D-3 District meet.

District meet action for Classes C and D will take place on Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15 this year.

Joining Sutton in the C-3 meet will be: Aquinas Catholic, BRLD, Boone Central/ Newman Grove, Centura, Conestoga, Crofton/Bloomfield, Madison, Milford, Oakland-Craig, Quad City Northeast, Raymond Central, Tekamah-Herman, Wakefield-Allen, Wilber-Clatonia and Wisner-Pilger.

Three Harvard Cardinals competed in the Franklin High School cross country meet recently, with freshman Alyssa Ferguson leading the pack with a 15th-place finish, running to a time of 26 minutes, 24 seconds.

MacKenzie Wagner added a 29th-place finish with a time of 29:37, while Celina Chrisman placed 44th overall, with a time of 36:29.

Southern Nebraska Conference action for the Sandy Creek volleyball team would see a trip to Milford High School turn out to be a tough trip, as the host Eagles handed Sandy Creek a straight sets, 25-12, 25-9, 25-14 loss, dropping the Cougars to 1-18 on the season.

In the match, SC had a pair of aces, with Makenzie Dane and MaKenzie Bohlen each gaining one.

Jaden Claycamp had 10 of the Cougars’ 15 kills in the loss, while Maryn Martin put up all 15 assists.

Libero, Caileigh Tripe led in digs with 13, while Claycamp added seven.

Martin and Leah Hatch both added five digs in the match for the Cougars.

The path to Sandy Creek’s second win of the 2019 volleyball season was no easier on Thursday, Oct. 3, as the Cougars fell in a pair of competative matches at Centura High School.

Minden would take a 27-25, 25-17 victory over the Cougars, while the host Centurions claimed a 25-17, 25-17 win, leaving Sandy Creek with a 1-20 record on the year.

Maryn Martin, against Minden, put up 18 assists, with Jaden Claycamp taking advantage of Martin’s sets, as Claycamp gained a team high eight kills against the Whippets.

Claycamp also led in aces with two, while Martin added one.

From her libero spot, Caileigh Tripe gained a team high 13 digs, while Leah Hatch had 12 block assists in the loss.

A tough Southern Nebraska Conference loss at home to the Fillmore Central Panthers has left the Sutton Fillies with a 8-10 record, as the Panthers downed Sutton 25-21, 25-15, 25-12 Tuesday, Oct. 1.

Nine service errors, along with 17 hitting errors didn’t help the Fillies in the match, as Sutton was 41-50 in the service lane (82%), while going 69-86 at the net (80.2%).

Tara Overturf collected a team high three ace serves, while Kylie Baumert, Reagan Vavricek and Dayvie Perrien added one ace each.

Baumert and Vavricek combined for 14 of the Filles’ 23 kills, as Baumert gained eight and Vavricek, six.

Baumert also led in blocks with three, whil Kate Griess led in assists with 11. Overturf added eight assists, while in digs, Perrien, the Fillies libero, collected 15, with Vavricek gaining nine.

Sutton vs. Fillmore Central

As the old saying goes, “close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades,” and that feeling has surrounded the Sandy Creek football team this week, as the Cougars fell just short of their third win of the season, falling to once beaten Doniphan-Trumbull, 14-13, this past Friday.

Outside of a 44-6 loss to Shelby-Rising City in week two of the season, Sandy Creek has had narrow misses with the Cardinals this week, as well as a five-point loss to Fillmore Central and a six-point loss to Hastings St. Cecilia.

If the crystal ball had tweaked a play here or there throughout the season, Sandy Creek could easily be 5-1.

But as the cards fell, the Cougars’ one point loss Friday night came down to a missed two-point conversion, leaving the Cougars on the short end again against the Cardinals.
