Sutton Seniors win 2 of 3

The Sutton Senior Legion baseball team claimed two of three wins this past week, taking care of business against Fairbury and Geneva, before being handed a six-run loss to Grand Island Sunday afternoon.

In action at DLD Park June 19, Sutton scored three runs in each of the first, second, fourth and sixth innings, to post a 12-4 win over Fairbury.

Nathan Drudik, Garrett Nuss and Will Reeson pounded out two hits each in the eight-run win, as Drudik was 2-2, while Nuss and Reeson were both 2-4 with a single and a double each to lead Sutton.

SCH hosting Run/Walk For a Resident June 29

Sutton Community Home will host a “Run/Walk For a Resident,” as a fundraiser for the proposed new Sutton Community Home facility as a benefit to the Sutton Community Home Foundation.

The race, which begins at 7:45 a.m., this Saturday, starting at the home.

The fees are $20 for a onemile fun run/walk and $25 to participate in the 5k. All paid entries will receive a T-shirt and goodie bag.

The Sutton Senior Legion baseball team took a double header sweep from the Silver Creek Seniors at DLD Park, Wednesday, June 12, winning the opening game in a big way, 11-4, before having to battle to sweep the visitors with a narrow 1-0 victory in the nightcap.

Ty Skalka manned the pitchers mound in game one of the double header, throwing a strong complete game in seven innings on the mound.

Skalka recorded six strikeouts and walked just three, while allowing two hits and the four Silver Creek runs in the top of the third inning.

In a wild outing Sunday afternoon, the York Junior Legion baseball team broke an 8-8 tie in the top half of the seventh inning to outlast the Fairfield Juniors 11-9 with a 3-1 edge in the final inning.

The high scoring affair was equally as impressive in the batters box, as the two teams combined for 31 total hits, with York gaining 18 hits, including four doubles and 12 singles. Fairfield tagged the York pitching for 13 singles and nine runs batted in.

In the first, after York took a 2-0 lead, Wynn Wilmot scored on a Toby Turman single to set the game at a 2-1 score.

Carlson is captain of all-star squad

Lee Carlson, a 2019 graduate of Sutton High School, had a banner day Saturday as one of four captains for the Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association all-star duals held at Grand Island Senior High School. Carlson controlled Thayer Central’s Damien Stewart 14-5 to help Carlson’s blue squad earn a 21-14 dual win over their red squad counterparts.

Sutton Seniors cruise past York

Dusty Stone gained a single on this hit in Sutton’s opening game win over York to help Sutton improve to 5-5 on the year with the two-game sweep of York.

The Sutton Senior Legion baseball team gained a pair of big wins, as the Post #61 seniors finally were able to appear in front of the home crowd at DLD Park in Sutton.

The Sutton crew claimed a big double header win over the York-Cornerstone senior June 5, taking the opening game 10-2, before claiming game two, 6-2.

Garrett Bonnell, by way of a complete game effort on the mound, would allow five York hits and two walks, while gaining five strikeouts in the two-run shut down of the visitors. Bonnell threw 88 pitches to get the win.

Sutton and York faced a 1-1 tie after the first inning, before Sutton came to life in the second frame to plate five runs and gain a 6-1 edge.

York cut the lead to 6-2 in the third, before a three-run fourth pushed the locals to a 9-2 lead before finishing off York with one run in the sixth inning to post the eight-run win.

Carlson to wrestle in all-star dual Saturday at GI Senior High

Sutton graduate Lee Carlson will take part in the Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association all star duals this Saturday at Grand Island Senior High School beginning at 11 a.m.

Sutton’s Lee Carlson will be a part of the 2019 Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star duals this Saturday morning at Grand Island Senior High.

The duals are set to begin at 11 a.m., with Carlson joining 32 other wrestlers in the annual event.

Four other Southern Nebraska Conference wrestlers will join Carlson in the action, including Keegan Casey and Damian Steward of Thayer Central, Ace York of Fairbury and Noah Styskal of David City. Cole Ulmer of Broken Bow, the son of Sutton Alumni Paul and Connie Ulmer will also be a part of the dual action.

Nuss battles in 61st annual Shrine Bowl

Garrett Nuss, a 2019 graduate from Sutton High School, was the ninth Mustang in the 61-year history of the Nebraska Shrine Bowl to play in the game. Nuss played as a center on the offensive line, as well as a blocker on punts for the South team. Above, Nuss moves in to block Hunter Jones of Omaha Burke during the annual contest, held in Kearney this past Saturday. The North earned a 32-10 win over the South squad.
