TORY DUNCAN | CLAY COUNTY NEWS

Sutton senior Kyle Baumert breezed to the C-7 District 110-meter high hurdle title May 9, with a time of 15.2 seconds. Thayer Central’s Phillip Price, right, was second in 15.69 seconds, while Cade Sterner of Doniphan-Trumbull, left, was third in 15.88 seconds. Baumert heads to the state track meet with the second fastest qualifying time from all of the Class C district meets across the state last week.

A pair of seniors will represent the Sutton Mustangs at this year’s state track meet in Omaha, as Kyle Baumert will enter the state meet in two events, the 110-meter high hurdles and the 200-meter dash, while Rogers will head to Omaha Burke High School in the shot put.

Sutton would finish the cold and blustery C-7 District meet at Sandy Creek in third place, scoring 62 points, while Thayer Central led all teams with 100 points and Doniphan-Trumbull tallied 74 points for the runner-up finish.

Baumert’s day was a big one in the C-7 meet, but didn’t come without some disappointment. The senior qualified for the finals in the hurdles, the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter event, but after crusing to the win in the 110-meter hurdles, with a time of 15.2 seconds, a false start in the finals of the 100-meter sprint disqualified the speedster from the event, leaving him short of a possible third event in Omaha.
