She married Jean Laffitte of Mansfield, LA, on Dec. 26, 1955, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clay Center. The couple lived in Mansfield, LA, for over 40 years before returning to her hometown of Sutton for the past 16 years. She was a member of the Toledo Squares in Louisiana, Sutton Argonne Post #61 American Legion Auxiliary and United Methodist Church in Harvard. Marilyn was blessed with a beautiful voice and she loved to sing in church congregations throughout her life in Mansfield, LA, Grand Cane, LA, Sutton, and Harvard, and friends would rally at the opportunity to hear Marilyn sing. When she returned to Louisiana to visit she could usually be found at the First Southern Methodist Church in Stonewall singing and laughing with McKee Williams (preacher and friend) and the two accompanied each other for several of her granddaughters’ weddings. Marilyn had many hobbies in which she loved, including sewing, crocheting, quilt making, square dancing, playing games and spending time with her family. She loved the outdoors too — fishing in her younger years, bird and squirrel watching; and most of all visiting her friends. She had some wonderful friends over her lifetime and shared many cherished memories with them all. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Jean Laffitte, of Sutton; children, Bruce Laffitte and his wife, Lennie (Kastens) of Salina, KS; Bonnie and husband, Otis Calhoun of Mansfield, LA; Julie and husband, Randy Fuller, of Stonewall, LA; and Debbie and husband, Bill George of Sutton; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Helen (Steinbruck) Syring; siblings, Bonnie Syring, Leila Syring, Betty (Syring) Curtis, Donald Syring and Harlan Syring.
