Walter Edwin Ulmer, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away May 4, 2022, in Sutton, at the age of 96. He was surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest.

Walter was born to Jacob and Julia Ulmer, the youngest of 13, on Nov. 1, 1925 in Burke, SD. He graduated from Benedict high school in 1942 and joined the Army in 1945. He returned to Sutton after his deployment to Korea. He remained a life long member of the American Legion. He did custom combine work and coowned The Pool Hall with his brother. He always said he loved working with farm equipment.

Walter married Donna May Bauer on May 23, 1954. They shared a wonderful 68 years together and had three children; Mike, Cyndi and Theresa. Walter, or Wally as known by many, managed the Clay Center Co-Op Grain Co. and raised their three children in Clay Center.

The simplest pleasures of life brought great joy to Wally. He loved fishing, golfing, woodworking, and of course playing cards and partaking in Ulmer wine. He dedicated his retirement to blessing his grandchildren; Amanda, Michael, Jessica, Mariah, Joshua, Caleb, Eli, and Henley. He actively participated in each of their lives and they are beautiful people because of the positive impact he made. He also had five great-grandchildren; Zane, Tatum, Henry, Lewis and Wyatt, with number six on the way this August.

Wally was known for his quick wit and he touched many lives in his long journey. The family plans to hold services at a later date.
