An extra dose of thankfulness

By Tory Duncan

Ican honestly share that after the past two or three weeks, this Thanksgiving will take on a much bigger meaning for so many families this year. The loss of so many loved ones these past few weeks really brings to the forefront of our minds not only who will be missing at the dinner table for the big Thanksgiving meal, but so many great memories and feelings will abound during this family time. I ran across a poem shared on Facebook by a family member that recently lost a loved one, and it really hit home in a big way...Thank you Jordy! Here is what was shared... “The pies are in the freezer, the turkey’s on the list, But this Thanksgiving, oh how a loved one will be missed!.

Stop the complaining; accept the winner

By Ashley Swanson

It’s over. Of course, by that, I mean the election. Like so many others in this world, I watched the presidential election from the moment they began counting ballots, to the moment they began projecting states, and, even though I had gone to bed by midnight, I found out around 2 a.m., who had won. This election year has been a grueling one, and throughout election day, all I heard was how historic the outcome—no matter the outcome— would be. The first female president or the first outsider president. At about 2 a.m. (central time), Donald Trump was announced as the 45th president of the United States. After watching such a close race, it was shocking to see him become the president, but I feel it would have been shocking either way.

Traveling the Nebraska byways

By Tory Duncan

Nebraska is certainly a state with many sights to be found, and this past weekend, while making the 300-mile trek to Cody last Friday to cover the Harvard/ Cody-Kilgore Six-Man playoff game, I always seem amazed with what one can see, even if we’ve traveled the roads. I traveled through, or nearby 23 towns along the trek.

Thanksgiving vs. Christmas; the showdown

By Ashley Swanson

November is the month to give thanks for everything we have in our lives. At the end of the month, families come together for a hearty meal and some good company. But wait, what is that I hear in the distance? Jingle Bells? Frosty? Silent Night?

An exciting night, high spirits at Harvard

By Ashley Swanson

One of my favorite part about Harvard is their spirit. No matter what activity is going on, no matter what the score of a game is, the spirit level is at maximum. Harvard’s football season, thus far, has been exciting, for the athletes, coaches, crowd and certainly those from the CCN who cover them, and at every game, that well known spirit is never lacking.

Harvard football...The road to Cody

By Tory Duncan

Cody, NE, according to the 2010 census, has a population of 154. It’s nestled in the northern sandhills of Nebraska, some 45-50 miles west of Valentine in Cherry County, just a hop, skip and jump south of the Nebraska-South Dakota border. Cody is the next stop on the magical ride that is Harvard football this season. This past Friday night’s playoff win over South Platte marked the first time since Oct. 30, 2003, that the Cardinals’ program has won a playoff game. On that date in 2003, Harvard rolled past Diller-Odell 56-20, before bowing out of the Class D-1 eight-man playoffs to Falls City Sacred Heart on Nov. 5, 2003.

The busy stretch of the fall season

By Tory Duncan

Annually in late fall, the time of year to gear up for the end of the fall sports season, it quickly slaps me in the back. It’s hard for me to believe that as of this Friday, the regular season of the high school football season is over! My oh my, time flies when you’re having fun.
