For the second year in a row, a Clay County school district has been honored as the top Career and Technical Education program in the state of Nebraska, as honored by the Nebraska Department of Education, during the annual NDE Career Education Conference, held at the Younes Conference Center in Kearney.

The South Central Nebraska Unified School District #5 Nebraska Center for Advanced Professional Studies program was honored during a special honors program early Tuesday afternoon as the outstanding secondary program in the State of Nebraska. Sutton’s program was honored as the top secondary program in 2018.

Receiving the honor on behalf of the SCNUSD program Tuesday was Dr. Stan Essink, District NCAPS Coordinator, Jason Searle, 6-12 Principal at Sandy Creek and Dana Epley, Pre Kindergarten through 12th grade Principal at Lawrence-Nelson.

Sandy Creek’s students think very highly of their school in some ways, while other aspects present opportunities for improvement.

SC secondary principal Jason Searle presented the results of the online YouthTruth survey during the South Central Unified School District #5’s Board of Education regular meeting on May 20, at Lawrence-Nelson High School in Nelson.

YouthTruth is a tool that schools can use to aid in needs assessment and strategic planning. All SC middle and high school students completed the survey earlier this year, rating the school in the areas of academic rigor, belonging and peer collaboration, college and career readiness, culture, engagement, and relationships.

Since 1949, Sutton has had a grocery store located at the corner of Saunders Avenue and West Grove Street, first belonging to Forrest and Verna Brown, before being passed down to their sons Mark and Alan in 2007.

In 2012, when Alan passed away, Mark became the sole owner, running the store alongside his wife, JoAnn.

Today, the store is well known and heavily used by Suttonites and area communities, and on July 1, the changing of owners will once again take place.

Towns across Clay County celebrated the memory of those who fought for our freedoms but are no longer with us today, during Memorial Day services Sunday, May 26 and Monday, May 27.

A strong weather system hit all of Clay County Sunday evening through early Monday morning, making the Memorial Day events and services a messy situation. Fairfield and Harvard services were forced to be held indoors, as many areas of the county, according to the website NeRain, had over three inches of rainfall cover hundreds of acres of farmland in many reaches of the county.

As of early Monday afternoon, the Little Blue River in southern Clay County was flowing out of its banks, while along Highway 6, water from School Creek flowed over the road, forcing the Nebraska Department of Roads to close a section of the highway from Highway 14 north to Aurora to the western edge of Sutton.

The Clay County Board of Supervisors likes the direction that the Clay County Sheriff’s department is going—the county now has a full slate of eight deputiesand the board wants to keep it that way.

With an ongoing national shortage in law enforcement officers, especially in rural areas, wages are a key way for Clay County to stay competitive in the job market, as well as retain the deputies currently on force.

Sheriff Jeff Franklin gave a wage comparison with area police forces during the board’s regular meeting on May 21 at the courthouse in Clay Center.
