Grafton, NE resident Barbara Jean Hoagland, 68, passed away suddenly Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at her home in Grafton, NE. A celebration of her life was held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 9, 2016, at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton, NE, with Pastor Mary Scott officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date. No visitation, cremation has taken place. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be designated at a later date. Condolences may be left at www.suttonmemorial.com Barbara was born on Oct.16, 1947, in Hastings, NE, to Francis and Arlis (Serr) Rolfes. She was the oldest of four children. Her childhood was spent helping at the family tavern in Sutton, NE. Barbara attended Sutton Public School and graduated in 1965. She then attended art schools in Chicago, IL, and Denver, CO. In 1967, she married Galen Hoagland and to this union were born two children: Tracy and Nick.

Le Mars, IA–Valda J. Embree, 85, of Le Mars, passed away at her home on Tuesday, March 22, 2016. A memorial service was scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at the United Methodist Church of Le Mars. Rev. John Battern officiated. Burial took place at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. There was one hour of visitation at the church prior to the Memorial Service. The Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars assisted the family with arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may be directed through www.mauerjohnsonfh.com. Ms. Valda Joan Embree was born on April 14, 1930, in York, Nebraska to Burton and Esther (Yost) Franz. She attended York College, where she met her future husband, Robert A. Embree, who also was a student at the college. The two were united in marriage on Aug. 23, 1950, in her Sutton, NE, home church.

Campbell resident Jack M. Lieb, 78, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2016, at Mary Lanning Healthcare, Hastings. Graveside services were Monday, April 4, 2016, 2 p.m., at Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, NE, with Pastor Ronald Kuehner officiating. There will be no viewing or visitation. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 until 1960. Jack married Patricia J. Ejlersen on Feb. 12, 1972. He was employed as a carpenter and worked at Farmland Industries in Hastings.

Services were Monday, April 4, 2016, 10:30 a.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, west of Glenvil, with Pastor Renee Johnson officiating. Burial with military rites by Glenvil American Legion were in St. Paul’s Lutheran Churchyard Cemetery, west of Glenvil. Memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or Glenvil Fire and Rescue. Visitation was Sunday, April 3, 2016, at 4-6 p.m., at the funeral home and one hour prior to service at the church. Janet K. Grantzinger, 72, of Greeley, CO. passed away March 15, 2016. She was born Jan. 31, 1944, to Ivan and Gladys (Willcock) Majors in Sutton, NE. She graduated from Sutton High School in 1962. Janet married Gerald “Jerry” Grantzinger of Merna, NE, at the Federated Church on July 26, 1963. The couple relocated to Greeley, CO., immediately following. They celebrated 52 years of marriage. Janet worked for State Farm Insurance before and after her marriage, for 43 years. She enjoyed sewing and quilting. She has stitched a number of items with love for her family and friends over the years. Janet was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. Janet was a member of the Quilt Guild, Quilts of Valor, Job’s Daughters and Eastern Star. She attended Foundations Church in Loveland. She was a former member of the American Business Women’s Association and Insurance Women of Greeley.

Darrel Downing Rippeteau

Darrel Downing Rippeteau, D e l ray Beach, FL., passed away peacefully amidst relatives Monday, Feb. 8, 2016. He had celebrated his 99th birthday on Jan. 14, 2016. Born in 1917, to Claude Laverne and Eva Downing Rippeteau in Clay Center, he became a prominent architect in the U.S. Northeast, operating from Watertown and Syracuse, N.Y., with his firm designing schools and public buildings, such as the NYS Justice Building on the Empire State Campus in Albany. In 1939, he married Donna Doris Hiatt of Odell, a UNL graduate. They were married almost 50 years when Donna passed in 1988. Mr. Rippeteau graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Architecture with a BA, in 1941, and was commissioned a second lieutenant, going on active duty in 1942. He taught artillery at Ft Sill, OK., was later the XO of the ghost armies unit of WWII (now declassified; described in P. Gerard's book "Secret Soldiers", Dutton 2002) at Pine Camp, now Ft.

He grew up in Hampton and attended Zion Lutheran Parochial School and graduated from Hampton High School. Larry attended University of Nebraska at Lincoln for one year. Larry was united in marriage to Janet K . Griess on July 30, 1988, at Zion Lutheran Church in Hampton. Larry was a farmer and a welder.
