Jonathan Griess

Beatrice resident Jonathan Griess, 77, passed away Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019, at the Beatrice Community Hospital in Beatrice. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019, at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton, with the Free German Reformed Salem Church Elders officiating. Interment followed at the Free German Reformed Salem Church Cemetery near Sutton. Visitation was Tuesday, from 1–8 p.m., at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be designated later. Condolences may be left at www.suttonmemorial.com.Jonathan was the oldest son of Reinhold R. and Ruth (Huber) Griess. He resided at the Beatrice State Developmental Center for 67 years. He is survived by his two brothers, Don (Esther) Griess of Sutton; Martin Griess of Hastings; sister, Dorothy Caddy of Hastings; brother-in-law, Gerald (Sally) Nuss of Sutton, and three nieces, one nephew, and their families.

Billy K. McLaughlin

Billy Kent McLaughlin, son of Paul and Helen M. Vap McLaughlin, was born March 8, 1943, in Edgar. He departed this life on Friday, July 26, 2019, at his home in Edgar, at the age of 76 years.

Bill was a baptized member of the Methodist Church in Edgar. He attended Edgar Schools in his youth. He then found employment with Shuck Auto and later went to work for Darrell Johnson farming. Bill served his country during the Vietnam War with the United States Army from 1964-1966 with the 25th Lighting Infantry Brigade. Bill received the Purple Heart for being wounded in battle. After being honorably discharged, Bill returned home and began a career with the Ong Coop, which became the Aurora Coop and retired there.

Harvard resident Barbara Patrick, 79, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2019, at Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare, Hastings.

Memorial service was Saturday, July 27, 2019, at 11 a.m., at the Harvard First United Methodist Church, Harvard, with Pastor Buck Linton-Hendrick officiating. There was no visitation, Barbara’s wishes were to be cremated. Burial will be at a later date in the Harvard Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.apfelfuneralhome.com. Apfel Funeral Home, Harvard is in care of the family.

Memorials may be given to the Red Bird Mission, Epworth Village or the St. Joseph’s Indian School.

Services were 2 p.m., Monday, July 29, 2019, at the Harvard United Church of Christ, with Pastor Dave Johnson officiating. Visitation was Sunday, July 28, 2019, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., at the Harvard United Church of Christ. Burial with military rites was in the Harvard Cemetery, Harvard. Helen M. Salmen (Brandl) McLaughlin

Helen Mary Salmen (Brandl) McLaughlin was born Jan. 9, 1927, in Spencer, to Elizabeth (Warnke) and John Salmen. Helen graduated from Butte High School in 1944. After high school, Helen taught country school and later moved to Omaha to work for Union Pacific railroad as a key punch operator. It was in Omaha she met Joe Brandl II.

Helen and Joe married Jan. 31, 1948 and together had nine children. Helen and Joe owned Brandl’s Café and Steakhouse in Edgar for 13 years. Many fond memories from hunters, railroaders, pilots, folks passing through and locals of the finest home cooking in the area. Helen married Wyman (Hienie) McLaughlin on Feb. 19, 1973, after Joe’s passing in 1970. Helen also worked at the Edgar Care Center in the laundry dept. for approx. 15 yrs. She was a very loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Ervin Craig Fuehrer

Ervin Craig Fuehrer, age 64 of Grafton, died Wednesday, July 17, 2019, at his home. Ervin was in the salvage industry and he took much pride in scrapping over 150 missile silos and 8 command centers. Later he used many of the unique pieces he had acquired from doing this work in the construction of his home. He was a self-professed story teller and enjoyed teaching his family and friends the art of various handyman skills. He was dedicated to his community and would lend a hand whenever possible. Ervin and his green army jeep will be missed by all.

On Nov. 1990, he was married to Bernice Scholine. Together they raised five daughters.

He is survived by his daughters; Mary (Trent) Hill of Surprise, AZ; Mindy Barney of Lincoln; Amy (Isaac) Poland of Grafton; Marcia (Bo) Robinson of Sutton; and Janelle Fuehrer of Grafton and 11 grandchildren.

Melba J. Kimminau

Melba Jean Kimminau, 90, formerly of Fairfield, passed away July 4, 2019, at the Harvard Rest Haven in Harvard.

A funeral service for Jean will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 11, 2019, at the Fairfield Community Presbyterian Church in Fairfield, with Pastor Ivan and Joyce Dean presiding.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 10, 2019, from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m., with the family greeting the public from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., at the McLaughlin Funeral Chapel in Clay Center.

Graveside services will be conducted following the funeral service at the Fairfield Cemetery in Fairfield, Nebraska.

Memorials are to be directed to the Harvard Rest Haven or Fairfield Auxiliary. Condolences may be left at www.mclaughlinchapel.com.

Tessa D. Sadd

Tessa D. (Anthony) Sadd, 39, of Hastings, passed away June 27, 2019.

Tessa was born to Steven Anthony and Cheryl (Stolley) Krull on June 29, 1979, in Hastings.

Memorial services were at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 6, at North Shore Assembly of God Church in Hastings, with Pastor Mel Johnson officiating.

Visitations were Friday July 5, from 5-8 p.m., with family present, at DeWitt Funeral Home at 1247 N. Burlington in Hastings. Funeral services were provided by Murray Wilson Funeral Directing of Hastings. Memorials may be directed in care of Amber and Clayton Pavelka, 100 West 33rd St. Hastings, NE 68901. Burial will be held at a later date.

Tessa was an organ donor to help others and her wishes were to be cremated.

Tessa was employed by 40 North Tap and Grill of Grand Island. Tessa was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, American Legion Riders in St Paul, and a member of the American Legion Baseball World Series National Staff.

Doris E. Shockey, 77, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2019, at Bryan Medical Center West Campus in Lincoln.

Memorial services were conducted at 1 p.m., Friday, July 5, 2019, at the Clay Center Christian Church in Clay Center, with Pastor Arick Johanson officiating. Refreshments and fellowship followed the service at the church. In honoring her wish to be cremated there was not any visitation or viewing.

Judy Ann Yost

Judy Ann Yost, 71 of Sutton, passed away on June 28, 2019 in Lincoln, at St. Elizabeth’s hospital. Services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday July 9, 2019, at Sutton Federated Church, with Pastor Mary Scott officiating.

Judy was born March 13, 1948 to David “Paul” and Viola Mae (Roberts) Bruns in Hastings. She graduated from Sutton Public School in 1966. Judy attended Josephs College of Beauty in Lincoln and held her Cosmetology license for 47 years.

She owned and operated Clip N Curl in Sutton and later Classy Country Curls in Sutton. She also worked for the Mane Corner and was a beautician at the Sutton Community Home.
