Mustangs Dominate D-1 District

With energy levels at an ultimate high this past Friday and Saturday during action at the D-1 District Meet, hosted by Freeman High School in Adams, the Sutton Mustang wrestling team calmly shored up a record setting performance in capturing team gold in dominating fashion over second place High Plains Community.

Mustangs Slip to 10-11 on the Year

Coming off of a big win in the consolation game of the Southern Nebraska Conference tournament on Feb. 8, the Sutton Mustangs looked to improve upon the big win over Heartland, but instead, ran into a wall of talented teams, dropping three games this past week, falling to York, 70-49, Fillmore Central, 54-41 and Fairbury, 38-32 to fall to 10-11 on the year.

Fillies Hold off SC Girls 48-43

Just nine days following Sutton’s 58-31 win over the Sandy Creek girls, the Fillies and Lady Cougars once again found themselves in yet another battle, this time in the semifinal round of the Southern Nebraska Conference tournament, played at Centennial High School in Utica.

Sutton Stuns W-C, Falls to Panthers in Semifinals

The opening two rounds of action in the Southern Nebraska Conference basketball tournament proved to be contrasting nights for the Sutton Mustangs. Sutton stunned fourth seed Wilber- Clatonia, 45-41, Friday, Feb. 5, but couldn’t quite get past topseeded Fillmore Central in the semifinal round of the tournament, falling to the Panthers, 54- 39, Saturday, Feb. 6.

Harvard Boys Fall in Double OT to Eagles

The Harvard boys took a tough loss on the chin Friday night with their trip to Central City to take on the Eagles of Nebraska Christian. The Cardinals stormed out to a five-point halftime lead, outscoring the Eagles 12-9 in the first quarter and 10-8 in the second quarter, to hold a 22-17 lead at the half.

In the annual Clay County battle between the Sutton Fillies and Sandy Creek Lady Cougars, the Fillies would have three hit in double figures, as Sutton ran past Sandy Creek, 58-31, in Southern Nebraska Conference action at Sandy Creek, Jan. 28. Seniors Hailee Hanthorn, Sydney Griess and McKenna Griess combined to score 37 of the Fillies’ 58 points. Hanthorn hit for a game high 13 points, while the Griess sisters both added 12 points.

Van Kirk Leads Mustangs with 14, Munoz Tallies 27 for Cougars
 
In yet another classic battle between the Sutton Mustangs and the Sandy Creek Cougars, the Mustangs hit five more three-point shots and sank three more free throws than did the Cougars, lifting Sutton to a 56-48 Southern Nebraska Conference win over Sandy Creek, Thursday, Jan. 21. Sutton’s Casey Van Kirk led a total of eight players that scored in the win, lifting the Mustangs to 8-7 on the year.

Sandy Creek Boys Get Two Wins

Two much needed wins were earned by the Sandy Creek boys as the Cougars, who had dropped six of their last seven games, earned a pair of wins over the Blue Hill Bobcats and the Thayer Central Titans. John Sock and Gabe Munoz combined for 35 points in a 61-57 win over the Bobcats on Jan. 21. On Saturday, Munoz shredded Thayer Central’s defense for 37 points on his own, to help Sandy Creek claim a 61-58 win, improving the Cougars to 6-8 on the year.

Fillies Hold Off Ravenna, Run Past Heartland Girls

In a battle of state ranked teams in Class C-2, the fourth ranked Sutton Fillies earned a hard fought 55-52 win over seventh ranked Ravenna inside the Sutton Dome, as the Fillies improved to 12-3, while Ravenna fell to 11-4, with the loss. Returning to Southern Nebraska Conference play Saturday afternoon, the Fillies, after trailing Heartland 23-21 at halftime, exploded for a 22-7 run in the third quarter, to break open a tight game and preserve a 57-48 win over the Lady Huskies.

Harvard Hoopfest Tourney Set for Feb. 20-21

Make your plans now to join in on a weekend full of basketball with the annual Harvard Men’s Hoopfest basketball tournament, slated to be hosted by the Harvard Football program Feb. 20-21. The double-elimination tournament guarantees each team at least two games over the course of the two-day tournament.
