Harvard added another win and two losses to their season, following tournament play Thursday, Sept. 5.

Against Shelton, the Bulldogs took the first set, 25-20, and kept the Cardinals at bay in the second with a 25-16 win.

Juniors Morgan Juranek and Paisley Longoria were strong attacking components for the Cardinals, hitting four and three kills, respectively.

Coming off of a sluggish opening half of play in the season opening game at North Platte St. Pats, the Sutton Mustangs defensive efforts have been heard loud and clear for six straight quarters of play, spanning back to the second half of the 17-7 win over the Irish.

Game two would pit the Class C-2 fifth-ranked Mustangs against sixth-ranked Wilber-Clatonia, a team that in 2018 the Mustangs crushed 38-0 on the Wolverines home field.

This go-round would produce yet another shutout win over W-C, as a second quarter touchdown run by junior quarterback Cade Wiseman and a fourth quarter sprint into the end zone by senior running back Jackson Perrien sealed a 16-0 win for the Mustangs, to improve to 2-0 on the year.

Harvard’s football team has been ranked No. 1 in Six-Man by the Omaha World-Herald heading into the 2019 season, with their first game slated for Friday, Aug. 30, against Spalding Academy, at home.

The Cardinals kicked off the 2018 season with a win over Spalding Academy, taking the 20-point win Aug. 24.

Nine more wins would follow, including a playoff game against the Cody-Kilgore Cowboys, where Harvard secured a 70-37 win, earning a spot against Wilcox-Hildreth in the final playoff game before state.

However, W-H would take a slim 63-50 win over the Cards, ending Harvard’s season 10-1.

Statistically, the team finished with an impressive 3,564 rushing yards in 11 games, with another 1,281 passing yards.

Coming off of a 4-22 season a year ago, the Sandy Creek volleyball team have seen a change at the helm of leading the Cougars in 2019, as Kortney Allen has taken over the head coaching duties.

Allen welcomes two seniors and four juniors to the 2019 season, including seniors Makenzie Dane and Marilyn Whitiker, along with juniors Jaden Claycamp, Caileigh Tripe, Maryn Martin and McKenzy Sanders.

Allen’s first Cougar squad is loaded with a strong sophomore class, as 13 10th grade players are on the roster, including Leah Hatch, Jenna Heinz, Kennedi Tripe, Caitlin Rempe, Kirstyn Sherbeck, Lexi League, Kynnzie Skalka, Jaylin Sutton, Jenna Kempf, Ariana Clark, Megan Slechta, Brynn Claycamp and Davina Rivera.

Jaden Claycamp returns as the top hitter for Allen, as Claycamp gained 81 kills as a sophomore last year. In the service lane, Martin returns after gaining 21 aces, while serving just over 90 percent during her sophomore season in 2018.

More than 60 third through eighth grade girls attended a three-day volleyball fundamental camp held in Clay Center. Camp Director Karisa Troester along with Sandy Creek Club coaches, volunteers, and high school players worked on teaching proper techniques, fundamentals and what it takes to put it all together as a team.

The 10th annual Harvard People’s Project 5K/one mile run/walk, hosted during the Harvard Car Show, July 27, raised more than $1,000 to help those in need, thanks to 65 participants and generous sponsors.

Nate Jarosik was the 5K male winner and 5K male master’s (40+) winner for the third consecutive year, with a time of 17:11. That time broke his own master record set on Aug. 29, 2017.

The third Annual Gus Glantz Memorial Trap Shoot was held on Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Harvard Gun Club, near Harvard.

Glantz was a huge part of the Harvard Gun Club. He loved guns and knives and his enthusiasm for shooting sports lives on at the Harvard Gun Club.
