Deweese resident, Norma Jean Skalka, 88, died, Saturday, Sept. 1, at the Blue Hill Care Center, Blue Hill. Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 6, and Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 7, both at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, Deweese, with Father Thomas Schultes and Monsignor Adrian Herbek. Burial will be in Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Cemetery, Deweese. Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 6, from 5-8 p.m., at the Church and one hour before services. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the family to be designated at a later date. Private condolences may be sent to the family at www.lbvfh.com. Merten- Butler Mortuary, Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements. Norma Jean was born on Jan. 2, 1930, to Joe E. and Sophia (Kotinek) Svoboda at Spring Ranch. She attended grade school for two years at Liberty Creek School in Nuckolls County and six years at Sacred Heart Catholic School, Lawrence. She graduated from Lawrence High School in 1947. She then taught rural schools in Clay County for three years. Norma was united in Marriage to Leo E. Skalka on June 20, 1950, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lawrence. Leo preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 1995. Norma was a member of Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Deweese and its Altar Society. She was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Hastings and of the American Legion Auxiliary in Lawrence. Norma is survived by two daughters: Jeanette (Gene) Theer, Lincoln, and Susan (Larry) Kohmetscher, Lawrence; four sons: Gary, Kenneth and Lyle (Linda) Skalka, Deweese, and Wayne Skalka, Florida; one brother and sister-in-law: Gene (Marilyn) Svoboda, Deweese; one sister-in-law: Carol Svoboda, Lincoln; nine grandchildren: Jason (Shari) Theer, Tiffany Theer, Steffany (Garrie) Kobes, Shannon Skalka, Erin Johnson, Sean Skalka, Matt (Brandi) Skalka, Amanda Skalka, and Josh (Megan) Kucera; nine great-grandchildren: Dawson Kucera, Collin Kucera, Carson Kucera, Rowan Kucera, Mason Kobes, Payton Kobes, Harper Johnson, Piper Johnson, and Elliette Skalka. Norma is preceded in death by her parents; husband Leo; granddaughter: Megan Skalka; brothers and sisters-in-law: Thomas (Helen) Svoboda, Edward (Alice) Svoboda, and Bernard Svoboda; and sisters and brothers-in-law: Alice (Louis) Chvala, Helen (Ernie) Schroer, and Mary (Edmond) Kathman.
