Sorghum syrup-making a community activity

At first glance, the sorghum plant doesn’t look as if it’s filled with sweetness. However, push the plant stalks through a sweetener machine and boil it until it becomes an amber-colored syrup, and the plant’s sweetness comes to life.

For the past several years, Larry Pirnie of Broken Bow has brought his old-fashioned sweetener machine to Old Trusty, and with the help of several volunteers, turns sorghum plants into syrup.
