Sutton’s senior leader Tyler Bailey would pin his way to the gold medal during action at the Wood River Invitational Dec. 12, as he earned four pinfall wins to improve to 7-0 on the year. His efforts would help the Mustang wrestlers place sixth overall, in a meet that was dominated by five-time Class D state team champion Amherst. The Broncos, who have won the Class D state title every year since 2010, would run away with Friday’s team title, beating second place Shelton-Kenesaw by 147, holding a 274-127 edge. Sutton’s total of 89 team points would see Bailey score 28 of those points enroute to his second straight gold medal of the young season. Bailey would pin his way to the 132 pound title, pinning Brandon Mashburn of Shelton-Kenesaw in the first round in 1:10. Round two would see Bailey take out Kearney Catholic’s Noah Tillman in 1:07. In the semifinals, Bailey pinned Doniphan-Trumbull’s Zach McNally in 59 seconds.
