Stanley Ray Rabbe of Durango, CO, formerly of Sutton, NE, passed away Jan. 21, 2015. Stanley was born Nov. 15 , 1949, in Hastings, NE, t o C l eo H. and Dorothy M. (Schmidt) Ra b b e . He
grew up on the family farm near Sutton. He attended Sutton Public Schools, where he participated in music and sports. Following his high school graduation in 1968, he attended UNL for one year and then transferred to Wayne State College. In 1972, he received his BA in Education, with endorsements in mathematics and physical education. His first job was teaching at the Regional Center in Hastings. Desiring to further his education, he moved to Greeley, CO, and in 1974 and earned his Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado. He also earned a secondary guidance counselor certificate from Western State College in Gunnison, CO. After being a substitute teacher at Aurora Central High School, he began teaching there in 1976. Being the girls’ basketball coach, his teams went to the CHSAA State Tournament for four consecutive years. He was also a guidance counselor at Aurora Central before leaving there in 1984. In 1983, he and Dannie Pierce were married at his parents’ farm home near Sutton. They, with her son, Charles, moved to Durango in 1984. Stan and Dannie were divorced in 1990. In Durango, Stan continued teaching and coaching. Following his years of teaching, he transitioned to being a guidance counselor at Miller Middle School for nine years and Durango High School for seven years. He retired from teaching in 2002. Stan married Paula Lutz in New Mexico, in 1999. They continued to live in Durango. He loved construction projects and built two log homes north of Durango. He also enjoyed hunting and did so in Colorado, Nebraska and Alaska. After enjoying cycling while living in Durango, in 2002 he started training for marathons. Over the course of 10 years, he ran 45 marathons in 19 states, 10 countries and on seven continents. He was preceded in death by his father, Cleo, grandparents, Edward and Beatrice (Uldrich) Schmidt; and Otto and Lydia (Rabbe) Giebler. Family members include wife, Paula Lutz of Durango, CO, mother, Dorothy Rabbe of Sutton; sister, Pamela Stahl and husband,  Delvin of Sutton; brother, R. Michael Rabbe, and wife, Lisa of Kansas City, MO; nieces and nephews and their children. A Celebration of Life Service in memory of Stan will be held in Sutton on Feb. 21, 2015, 11 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family, who will be establishing an educational scholarship fund
