Connie M. Owens, 63, of Harvard, NE passed away Monday, Nov. 9, at her home, surrounded by family and a close friend. Connie was born Jan. 26, 1952, to Martin and Lucille (Simning) Waters at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings, NE. She was the youngest of the first set of triplets born at Mary Lanning. She graduated from Harvard Public School in 1970. After graduation, she worked as a telephone operator at Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph in Hastings. On Dec. 12, 1972, she married Larry “Red” Owens in Hastings, NE. To this union three children were born. They made their home in Harvard, NE, area. Her husband passed away Feb. 28, 2008. Connie spent many years taking care of animals. She had many horses, some of which she broke herself. She worked at Hastings Pork for 16 years and then became a homemaker.

Clay Center resident, Gerald ‘Jerry’ Calhoun, 75, passed away Monday, Nov. 9, 2015, at Harvard Rest Haven, Harvard, NE. Graveside Service was Friday, Nov. 13, 2015, 1 p.m., at Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, with Pastor Greg Lindenberger officiating. Visitation was Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015, 4–8 p.m., with family present 6–8 p.m., at the funeral home in Hastings. Memorials may be given to the Jerry Calhoun Memorial Fund to be designated at a later date, in c/o Butler Volland Funeral Home. Private condolences may be sent to the family at www.lbvfh.com. Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home & Cremation Center is serving the family. Jerry was born on Nov.15, 1939, in Hebron, NE, to Archie L. and Mildred C. (Weber) Calhoun. His family moved to Lincoln and Hastings in the late 40s. He attended Hastings High School. He worked as an Auto Body repairman and at Dutton-Lainson in the paint department.

WILLARD L. METTLER

Willard Leroy Mettler, the son of Howard and Lauree (Warren) Mettler, was born on December 13, 1932, in Jewell County Kansas. He passed away on November 8, 2015, at the Harvard Rest Haven at Harvard, NE, at the age of 82 years, 10 months, 26 days. He graduated from Lovewell High School, Lovewell, KS, in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55, returning to farm with his dad, until purchasing his own farm in Jewell County. He married Margaret (Tatro) Collins on August 6, 1966. She had three boys Vic, Chuck and Joe Sr. Willard was a lifetime member of the Scandia American Legion, Scandia, KS, the Lovewell/Webber Methodist Church, transferring his membership, where he was very involved, to Clay Center Christian Church in Clay Center. After he retired from farming, Willard worked for the Kansas State Farm and Wildlife for several years. The last 12 years, he lived in Clay Center, NE, to be near his sister and brother-in-law. He drove the Clay County Senior Citizens bus.

Former Clay Center resident, Katherine Bitha Kinney, 82, passed away Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at the Harvard Rest Haven in Harvard, NE. Funeral services were 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 10, 2015, at the Clay Center Christian Church, with Pastor Nathan Brands officiating. Interment was at the Clay Center Cemetery. Sample, who brought Michael and Travis Sample to this union. Together, they had Heidi and lived in Sutton, NE, where Billie was employed by Dahlsten Truck Line of Clay Center until his retirement in 2006.

Lynn Roy Hoffschneider, age 58 of York, NE, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015, at his home in York. He was born July 9, 1957, in York to Roy and Betty (Smith) Hoffschneider. He was united in marriage to Teresa Green on April 7, 1978, at York. Lynn owned and operated ASAP Appliance and AC Service in Geneva, NE. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York. He enjoyed remodeling and construction projects, was a Koi fish and Indian motorcycle enthusiast. He also enjoyed being surrounded by his family. Survivors include his wife, Teresa of York; one son, Jared (Jane) Hoffschneider of Bradshaw, NE; three daughters, Jennifer Hoffschneider of York; Jillian (Brandon) Junge of York; and Jeana Hoffschneider, also of York; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother Kim Hoffschneider of McCool Jct., NE; three sisters, Loretta Bellows of York; Jeanette (Terry) Wittgren of Benedict, NE and Carol Roach and her fiancé Jack Anderson of Genoa, NE.

He enjoyed going to drag races and participating in road rallies, cruise nights and the Fourth of July parade in Clay Center, NE. He loved to take trips in his corvettes, motorcycles and other vehicles. His greatest enjoyment of all was spending time with his family.
