The Sandy Creek Cougars got the 2019-20 basketball season off to a flying start, opening the season at 2-0 with a 50-44 win over Wood River, Dec. 5, while holding off the David City Scouts 41-34, Dec. 7.
Thursday’s home bout with the Eagles would see senior Wyatt Mach and junior Keifer Anderson pace the scoring for the Cougars, as Mach hit for 17 and Anderson, 12, while Josh Shaw added nine in the win.
The Eagles, behind runs of 16-10 and 12-9 in the first half, claimed a 28-19 halftime lead, but a strong defensive effort by the Cougars in the second half, along with a steady scoring threat, produced a 31-16 second half run to produce the sixpoint win over the Eagles.
The Cougars shot just over 41 percent from the field, sinking 17 of 41 shots, while at the foul line, Sandy Creek was 13-26, 50 percent.
