Remembering what’s important

Article Image Alt Text

When I moved from Chadron into my “adult” life, all of my furniture was given to me by family members, or I had it from my childhood/ teenage years, and it followed me to Clay County.

Throughout the years some items broke and had to be thrown away, but for the most part I still had all of that furniture.

Recently I had to get rid of some it—the things I had been given when I moved, and I’ll be honest it was difficult. Writing this now it’s strange that I had such a connection with things such as furniture, but I did.

Cory Carlson (23) and Joe Hinrichs work together to bring down an Oakland-Craig Knight. Moving in on the play for Sutton is Maury Bautista (16).

Work ethic. That is what Sutton Head Football Coach Steve Ramer shared after the Sutton Mustangs fell short of the ultimate goal, the Class C2 State Championship Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.

“I tell you what, I couldn’t be more proud of our kids. The way they battled and worked their tails off to get where we finished today,” Ramer said. “Sure, a state title would have been great, but these kids have nothing to hang their heads about.”

Sutton, for the first time in 2019, was held scoreless in a game that was dictated by Mother Nature and challenging defenses on the part of both teams Tuesday afternoon.

Harvard’s entire team surrounds two McCool Junction players during a play during the state six-man championship game at the University of Nebraska-Kearney Friday, Nov. 22. The Cardinals earned the 17-point win, 50-33.

Storybook tales can’t be written any better than the story that the Harvard Cardinal football team has written the past four seasons.

Since 2016, the Cardinals had won 28 of 32 football games leading into the 2019 football season. Friday night, the Cardinals’ program sent out eight seniors as state champions, after capping a perfect 12-0 season, ending with the Class D-6 state championship on Friday, Nov. 22.

A 50-33 win over McCool Junction signed, sealed and delivered that storybook to head coach Scott Trimble and his staff, with a four-year record of 40-4, after breaking open a tight game with the Mustangs in the first half to capture gold on Foster Field on the University of Nebraska-Kearney campus.

It’s a culture, it’s been a magical ride this year

It’s not often, even a rarity, that a community newspaper gets the privilege to cover two football state championship game. I have to say, this year’s run by the Mustangs and the Cardinals was special in many ways to me! Harvard claimed the D-6 state title; coach Scott Trimble’s fifth title in his career, Harvard’s first-ever state six-man football championship. Sutton’s program, making it’s 10th straight Class C-2 playoff run, was capped with a tough 19-0 loss to Oakland-Craig Tuesday night in Lincoln. No matter a win or a loss, it has been an amazing run this year.

Standing on the sidelines at each game was a reward that we gained because of the hard work, the dedication and work ethics of both teams. You don’t just happen to get to a title game, you work your fanny off to get there. Just ask any one of the guys on each team, ask their parents, and certainly the coaches of each team. Hard work leads to great success.

Co. Board seeking public input about proposed solar project

There has been little public feedback to the Clay County Board of Supervisors about a proposed solar project in the Spring Ranch area.

APEX Clean Energy, headquartered in Virginia, has proposed a 305-megawatt solar farm to be placed on approximately 3,000 acres in the southwest corner of Clay County. Board member James Pavelka, of Glenvil, described the location of the proposed project as Road D, running west along the 345,000-volt Pauline-Moore transmission line, up to about Road 304.

Hands-on learning has a new meaning at Harvard Public School, after the implementation of zSpace.

zSpace takes a subject and brings it right into the hands of a student. Take for instance the heart; students can remove layers to see inside the heart, at the ventricles and vessels.

Learning about the bones and cartilage, students can zoom in on cartilage on bones and learn about the connecting parts of the human skeletal structure.
