C2-2 District Final: Sutton Mustangs (16-9) vs. Aquinas Catholic (14-10)

Monday nights C2-2 District Final for the Sutton boys basketball team will take the 16-9 Mustangs to Concordia University in Seward to challenge the 14-10 Monarchs of Aquinas Catholic in David City.
The 7 p.m. tip, inside the CUNE facility in Seward will punch a ticket to the 2015 State Boys Basketball Championships in Lincoln, March 12-14.
Sutton earned their ticket to the C2-2 District Final by way of a pair of wins this past week over Tri County, 45-32, Tuesday night and by downing the Southern Raiders Thursday night 50-45.
Aquinas Catholic’s path to the final included a 25 point, 75-50 win over Nebraska Christian in the C2-4 Sub-District first round and then a 54-37 win over Cross County during Thursday nights sub-district final, played at York High School.
Prior to the 2015 portion of their seasons, Sutton would go 3-5, while Aquinas reached the new calendar year with a 5-4 record following the completion of holiday tournament action for both teams.

C2-2 District Final: Sutton Fillies (21-4) vs. Nebraska Christian (19-5)

Tonight’s (Friday, Feb. 27) C2-2 District Final between the Sutton Fillies and the Nebraska Christian Eagles will pit two teams that come in with strong records and looking to make a trip to Lincoln next weekend for the 2015 Nebraska High School Girls State Basketball Championships.
As the Fillies and Eagles hit the court at Aurora High School for the 7 p.m. tip, Sutton, ranked sixth in the most recent Class C-2 state polls, comes in having won 18 of their last 20 games with losses coming to Class C-2 fourth ranked Freeman (24-2) and Class B fifth ranked (York 20-4).
The Fillies rolled through the C2-3 Sub-District, trouncing two Southern Nebraska Conference opponents in the process, Tri County in the first round, 59-22, and Fillmore Central in the C2-3 final, Thursday, Feb. 19, 61-24.

Kenesaw Halts Harvard’s Season Tuesday Night

The Kenesaw Blue Devils brought to a close the Harvard boys basketball team’s season Tuesday night, in the first round of the D1-9 Sub-District tournament at Hastings St. Cecilia, with a 49-27 win.
The loss ended the Cardinals season at 4-20.
The Blue Devils, behind runs of 15-7 and 9-5 held a 24-13 halftime lead. Kenesaw then used a run of 8-6 in the third, and a big run of 17-9 in the fourth, to solidify the 22 point win.
Tristan Kalvoda would score eight points in the loss to lead Harvard, while Nick Hankins added six, Jayden Callahan, five, and Tomy Alvarez, four, to lead the scoring for Harvard.
Allen Brand, who was held to just two points in the game, gained eight of Harvard’s 23 rebounds in the game, while Kalvoda led the team in steals with three, while Alvarez’ four assists topped the charts for the Cardinals.
Harvard shot just 30 percent from the floor and was 2-4 at the foul line.

Doniphan-Trumbull Ends Cougars Season

The Doniphan-Trumbull Cardinals would spoil the Sandy Creek boys efforts to advance into the C2-9 Sub-District’s, with a come-from-behind 43-42 win in a game played at the C.L. Jones Middle School in Mindent Tuesday night.
The Cardinals, who would open the game with a 16-7 first quarter lead, would watch on as Sandy Creek, behind a 17-10 second quarter run and an 11-4 third quarter run, take a 35-30 lead into the final eight minutes of play.
The Cougars, with just over two minutes to play, owned a 42-36 lead over D-T, but a 7-0 run in the final minutes by the Cardinals would bring to a close the 2014-15 season for the Cougars, with a 10-15 record.
Junior Kendall Dickson led Sandy Creek’s scoring efforts with 13 points, while senior Brendan Lipovsky, powered by dunks in the second and third quarters, hit for 12 points in the loss.

Mustangs Advance in C2-3 Sub-District

The Sutton Mustangs Tuesday night began the post-season run with their ultimate goal, to capture the C2-3 sub-district title and earn a trip to the 2015 Nebraska State High School basketball championship, with a win in the C2-2 District final this coming Monday, March 2.
Tuesday’s first round bout as the top seed in the c2-3 Sub-District, however, started on a rather sluggish note for the Mustangs, as fourth seeded Tri County grabbed a hold of a 10-5 first quarter lead to put a little shock and awe in the Mustangs.
Sutton, however, calmed their jets in the second and began chipping away at the Trojans lead, working toward an eventual 45-32 win, improving Sutton to 15-9, with the win.
Sutton held a 20-15 halftime lead after outscoring Tri County 15-5 in the second quarter.
A 9-1 Mustang run in the third lifted Sutton to a 29-16 lead heading into the final eight minutes, where Sutton and Tri County both tallied 16 points to produce the 13 point Sutton win.
