A big week for county wrestlers

BY Tory Duncan

Well, for the ninth straight year, I embark on the trek to Omaha to follow Clay County wrestlers that have qualified for the Nebraska State Wrestling Championships at Omaha’s CenturyLink Center.

The state meet, which runs this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, will feature 11 county grapplers, including five from the South Central Unified squad for Sandy Creek and Lawrence-Nelson. Sutton will send four matmen to the big show, while Harvard advanced two out of the D-3 District meet in Elm Creek.

Respect others in meetings

By Ashley D. Swanson

In my eight—or so— years of being a journalist, I’ve been to a few meetings. Meetings that were pretty boring; meetings that flooded attendees with information; meetings I regret attending; and meetings where people’s big mouths got the best of them.

In attending a meeting, there is a level of respect one must have for the meeting, those running said meeting, and those sitting around you.

Dilly Dilly...Just doesn’t do it for me

By Tory Duncan

There are many topics that were flowing through my mind this week, some perhaps much stronger than the Super Bowl, but it’s the Super Bowl I will share.

It was a great game to watch as a spectator but the outer lying impacts of the game were less than desirable. A halftime show that left me wondering why they spent that kind of money for it and commercials that left lots of companies spending a lot of money with no impact!

Did you know?

By Ashley D. Swanson

Facts are some of my favorite things. I love facts about animals, nature, insects, humans, and everything in between.

Facts give me that small hope that I’ll actually be able to teach somebody something one day because I know a little about a lot of useless information.

Digital distraction, a real threat to education

By Tory Duncan

It’s said that technology devices lend a hand in the world of education and I certainly can agree with that...IF devices are used for educational purposes.

Yep, for a second week in a row, I’m stuck on the “addiction” of our smartphones and other devices that we’re all guilty of toting along with us everywhere we go.

Understanding introverts

By Ashley D. Swanson

The sound of musicals can be heard throughout the house; there’s singing going along with it. There are two people, each one doing their own activity, and minus some slight talking, the two are not really conversing with each other.

That’s pretty much how introverts hang out...at least, that’s how Jenna and I hang out, and fun fact, we’re perfectly fine with it.

Social media communication gets missed

By Tory Duncan

Sometimes when you get involved, you get too involved! I’ve found this to be true with myself over the past eight and a half years since moving to Clay County.

When I moved here and started as Managing Editor of the Clay County News in June 2009, I told myself to get involved, so I did. I’ve been through the run of the Sutton Chamber, I’ve been involved with the Sutton Community Home Board, the Sutton Community Home Foundation Board, Clay County’s Emergency Management Board, and I’ve been involved with the Sutton Planning and Zoning Board, to name other committees and boards.

Rummaging through old boxes

By Ashley D. Swanson

My younger self was apparently wiser and more optimistic (and by younger self, I mean something like four to five years ago).

While rummaging through a box that had made its home in the basement of my previous house, I stumbled upon a notebook where I had written all of these inspirational quotes and optimistic excerpts, and just anything that suggests leading a happier life.

Hard to believe how time really flies

By Tory Duncan

With Mother Nature having a strong grip on much of the country this winter, whether it be brutally cold temperatures, sleet or snow, three weeks after the holiday season of 2017 and 2018, we find our local school basketball seasons at the midway point, with wrestling teams inching closer and closer to the post-season, with district action for the grapplers just a mere four weeks away, while post-season sub-district action for girls basketball teams looking at just over four weeks left until the sub-district seasons kick in.

It’s always amazing to me how fast days and weeks fly by each and every year. As it seems like just yesterday the school year began.

Learning to live with a 15-year-old

By Ashley D. Swanson

Before my 15-yearold cousin Loetta came to live with me, I did not have a designated cheese drawer in the fridge. I had a drawer with all the sandwich makings in it, but I didn’t have just a drawer full of nothing but cheese.

That’s just one small part of my life that has changed since she’s come to live with me, and let me tell you, quite a bit has changed. Nothing for the worse, but I’ve definitely had my perspective switched around in the short time she’s been here.
