Mustangs round out season 16-8

The Sutton Mustangs finished the 2017-18 season with a 16-8 record.

Sutton started the season on a high note with two wins, against Friend 84-39 and Nebraska Christian 67-35.

Sutton caps season with 1 state medalist

The Sutton Mustangs qualified four to the state tournament and finished with one— junior Lee Carlson, 120—on the podium.

Sutton started the season on a strong note, winning the first invitational at Harvard, while placing five in first, two in second, two in third and one in fourth. Lee Carlson, 120; freshman Joe Hinrichs, 126; sophomore Cory Carlson, 138; senior Chandler Stone, 152; and junior James Griess, 160, were champions at their respective weight classes.

Baseball camps to be hosted in Sutton

Scotts Major League camp

The Sutton Legion Baseball will be hosting a Scotts Major League Baseball Pitch Hit & Run competition at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 22 at the Watertower Field in Sutton. Pitch Hit & Run is the official skills competition of MLB.

Boys and girls competing will be divided into four age divisions, 7/8, 9/10, 11/12 and 13/14. They will have a chance to advance through four levels of competition, which could include Team Championships at Major League ballparks and the National Finals during the 2018 MLB All-Star Week.

Sutton's Lee Carlson earns third-place medal in Class C 120 pound class

The Sutton Mustangs sent four to the state wrestling tournament in Omaha this weekend and came out with 22 team points and one state medalist.

Junior Lee Carlson, 120-pounds, finished as the third-place medalist at the tournament. He guaranteed his spot on the podium on day one, winning both matches to advance to the second day’s semi-finals match.

Rempe leads Red Raider wrestlers

The South Central Red Raiders sent five to the state wrestling tournament in Omaha this weekend and came out with 21 team points and one state medalist.

Senior Hunter Rempe, 285-pounds, finished as the fifth-place medalist at the tournament. He guaranteed his spot on the podium on day one, winning both matches to advance to the second day’s semi-finals match.

Fillies earn second win of season

In the final set of regular season games for the 2017-18 season, the Sutton Fillies earned their second win of the season in a two-game split, with Wilber-Clatonia and Fillmore Central, to improve to 2-19 on the season, as the Fillies headed into sub-district play this past Monday night.

Sutton took down the Wilber-Clatonia girls in a convincing way, clobbering the Wolverines by 38 points in a 56-18 win, before Fillmore Central gained a 42-35 win over Sutton in the regular-season finale Friday, Feb. 9.

Red Raiders qualify 5

The South Central Red Raiders finished third as a team and qualified five wrestlers at the Class C-1 District wrestling meet hosted at Malcolm Friday and Saturday.

Freshman Tobey Turman, 106; freshman Rodney McDonald, 113; junior Chase DeVries, 126; senior Colt Rademacher, 195; and senior Hunter Rempe, 285, all qualified for the state tournament in Omaha beginning Thursday, Feb. 15.

Sutton 5th, South Central 7th at SNC

The Sutton Mustangs finished fifth and the South Central Red Raiders finished seventh at the Southern Nebraska Conference wrestling tournament Friday, Feb. 2. The Mustangs earned two champions, one second-place, one third-place, and three fourth-place finishers. The Red Raiders earned one at each level—one first, one second, one third and one fourth place.

Junior Lee Carlson finished at the top of the podium at 120-pounds. He went 3-0 on the day, winning his 100th career win in the first round with a 53-second pin. He continued the winning streak with a 15-0 tech fall at the 5 minutes, 1 second mark, and in the championship round with a 1:01 pin.

Mustangs finish 3rd at SNC tourney

The Mustangs finished third in the Southern Nebraska Conference tournament after defeating David City on Tuesday, Jan. 30, and then losing to Centennial Thursday, Feb. 1, 34-32, and winning the final game against Milford Saturday, Feb. 3, 51-46. The Mustangs are now 13-7 on the season with three regular season games remaining before sub-districts.

Cougars overpower Fillies

Sandy Creek wins the 5-point victory over Sutton Thursday

The Fillies and Lady Cougars fought a tough battle at the showdown game in Sandy Creek Thursday, Jan. 25, with the Cougars taking the eventual 35-30 victory.

Sutton started with the 7-6 lead after the first eight minutes, before the Cougars lit up and scored 14 to the Fillies zero in the second quarter to take the halftime lead 20-7.
