Fairfield now 2-1 on season, win home-opener

The Fairfield juniors earned the first win of the season on home turf, Wednesday, June 6. The team defeated Alma, 10-9, in six and a half innings. Fairfield then beat Hebron, 10-9, in spectacular fashion in the bottom of the seventh, Friday, June 8.

DEFEAT ALMA, 10-9

Wednesday, Fairfield put four players on the mound beginning with Andrew Paus, who threw for one inning, allowing four runs on five hits, while walking one and striking one.

Fairfield juniors fall at Sutton in season opener

The Fairfield juniors’ baseball team played its first game since reinstalling the team Wednesday, May 30, at DLD Park in Sutton.. Fairfield played the Sutton juniors for the first game, with Sutton taking the 8-3 win.

Fairfield was able to bring around three in the competition— Rodney McDonald, Matthew Maley and Connor Crumbliss, with Crumbliss and Brayton Jarosik earning RBIs in the game.

Sutton downs P-Dale in weather-shortened game

The Sutton Mustangs played three innings of a game against Pleasant Dale before the lightning caused the game to end for the night, Tuesday, May 29.

The game will be labeled as a suspended game as it won’t be finished at another time. The game will not count toward either team’s record. The Mustangs scored in all three at-bats the team had in the game, before the weather took control.

Seniors go 2-1 on the week; defeat York, Beatrice

Sutton’s seniors baseball team earned a 3-2 win against the York Cornerstones baseball team Wednesday, May 23, in Sutton’s home opener in a match-up that lasted for 11 innings. The team then split games Saturday and Sunday, winning against Beatrice 5-1 and falling to Grand Island Home Federal 10-2.

CORNERSTONE-YORK MAY 23

In the home opener against York, Garrett Nuss pitched six complete innings, with Nathan Drudik coming in as relief in the final five innings.

Sutton Jrs. stand at 2-3 on the year

The juniors earned a close win, 12-11, against York Cornerstone Wednesday in the home opener, advancing the team’s record to 2-0, but then fell in the next three games— Hastings, 29-4, Friday; Beatrice, 6-5, Saturday; and Grand Island Tom Dinsdale, 11-8, Sunday—to change the team’s record to 2-3.

CORNERSTONE, MAY 23

In the home opener against York, Quenton Jones, Eli Skalka and Nathan Drudik hit the mound for the Mustangs with Jones pitching 2.2 innings, Skalka for one out, and Drudik for two outs.

The Sutton boys’ team finish 6th in Class C at state meet

The Sutton Mustangs totaled 25 total team points at the state meet hosted at Omaha Burke Stadium Friday and Saturday to finish sixth in Class C. The team finished in the top eight seven times to bring home seven state medals.

“All of our kids did a fantastic job,” Head Coach Chad Wiseman said. “We didn’t finish as high in some events as we wanted, but part of that is the competition at state.

Harvard boys score 8.5 points

Nierman, Okraska represent the Cardinals at state meet

Senior Ray Nierman and sophomore Noah Okraska represented the Cardinals at the state meet this weekend.

Harvard competed in three events and scored 8.5 points with two medals for a team finish in 23rd place. Okraska competed in the 300 high hurdles and in the pole vault.

He was third in the preliminaries of the 300 hurdles in 41.65 seconds as he fell to the line. Okraska then finished sixth overall in the finals with a 43.06.

Harvard girls qualify 2 individuals, 1 relay team

The Lady Cards qualified two individuals and one relay team to the state meet at the end of the week. The team scored a total of 51 points at the district meet hosted at Tri County, Wednesday, May 9.

Senior Shyanne Porter led the girls’ team, qualifying for two events at the state meet. Porter finished second in the 100-meter dash in 13.14 seconds and qualified as an additional qualifier in the 200 where she finished third in 27.39.

Mustangs qualify 5 individuals, 2 relays for state track meet this week

The Sutton Mustangs earned the district title for the second year in a row. The boys’ team qualified five individuals and two relay teams for the state meet, Friday and Saturday, May 18-19. The Mustangs will compete in nine events at Omaha Burke Stadium at the end of this week.

The team was led by junior Cameron Kleinschmidt, who qualified in four individual events—the 110 hurdles, the 100-meter dash, the 300-meter hurdles and the long jump.
