Lighter Mood...

I had quite the experience late last week, ending my work week (at least in the office) on Thursday before heading to Milford for the Southern Nebraska Conference volleyball championship match between Sutton and Sandy Creek. Then, I went on to Lincoln for board.meetings on Friday and Friday night with the Nebraska Press Association. With that much drive time over the course of two or three days, it lent me time to reflect upon just how lucky I truly am in getting the luxury of covering successful schools not just athletically, but more importantly, the fact that I truly do feel lucky to follow and cover school districts that are successful across the board in terms of educational experiences and extra curricular activities.

Trust in our Leaders...

You know, as I sit at my desk thinking out loud, well, within my head, I’m really stuck in “school mode,” with my thoughts for the week. All three schools in Clay County have had their share of tough decisions facing them over the course of the past several weeks, and even in some cases, over the course of the past several months.

Stepping Up...

With hard work, dedication, and some optimism, a person can do anything. But to be an EMT, first responder or firefighter, being brave needs to be added to the list. In our rural Nebraska area, all of our EMT and firefighters are volunteers—every last one of them. To be a volunteer, a person has to be dedicated; willing to leave their families at a moments notice; willing to work toward the position; and despite their shaking skin and rapid heartbeat, they have to be brave...and that’s not something that can always be accomplished.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Every year at this time— October—Facebook, Twitter, commercials on TV and You- Tube and every sign along the highway, we see notices that it is breast cancer awareness month. Everything from quotes, from breast cancer survivors, to statistics from the American Cancer Society are plastered on computer screens and televisions.

Quick Fall Season...

Every year, it never ceases to amaze me that the school year, for that matter an entire calendar year, just flies by... literally flies by. At one point I made this comment to my middle sister during a phone call this past weekend, and her words to me....“Tory, you’re just getting older, and time flies when you get old.”

Blank Canvas...

Have you ever had one of those mornings where you wake up and you “got nothin’ going on upstairs?” Well, as I sit in front of my computer screen Tuesday morning to pen the Bull, my mind is blank and my eyes are looking at a blank canvas, so to speak. Oh, certainly there was plenty that happened this past week, like the 1991 Sutton girls basketball team being inducted into the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame...like the first of what could be four matches this year between Sutton and Sandy Creek on the volleyball court...

Knowledgeable Kids

Fire safety is something that is drilled into our heads as kids. We know who to call when there’s a fire. We know to stop, drop and roll if we’re on fire. We know that we should run for the street if our house catches on fire. We know not to leave a candle burning if we leave the house. But when it was time for the firefighters to teach us these things, often times we were more interested in the cool gadgets they brought with them and couldn’t wait to get our grimy fingerprints all over them.

A Fluffy Sports Feature

When it comes to writing about sports I.....well, I don’t write about sports. I could probably learn and I really should, but I’m a news person. Anyway, despite my lack of knowledge on how to write sports, I am OK at writing features. So, without further adieu, here is a sports feature that contains hardly any information about the actual sport. Last Friday night wasn’t very chilly. For late September, it was actually quite nice; however, earlier that day had been drowned in bouts of rain. And, although the sky lacked the dark clouds, looming ones threatened the possibility of turning Friday nights football game into a swampy situation.

Respect...

I am sure some of you that read the Bull week in and week out wonder where some of my thoughts come from each week....”Where’s Duncan going to go this week?” Well, this week it is easy for me, as you will see a different perspective in Jeana’s column, “Ripped Jeans,” we both share our thoughts regarding the 2015 Southern Nebraska Conference Sportsmanship Summit, held Wednesday, Sept. 23, in McCool Junction. Sandy Creek principal Jason Searle, while standing at the 4-H Horse Show at the Clay County Fair, came up and asked if I would consider talking to the students and sponsors during the summit.

A Day in the Archives

Besides the occasional event that needed to be covered, I spent my Friday in the depths of the CCN basement. In said basement, we have a large assortment of archives ranging all the way back to the late 1800s. Most of the archives are bound in thick books, while others are held together by a thick sheet of huge, white paper wrapped around them. I have always been facinated with archives because they hold something of the past that many cannot remember.
