Community Growth...

by Tory Duncan

As you will see this week, the Edgar community has begun a very important stage of moving the community forward. In addition, Sutton, which has already begun looking to the future, has taken steps to move their community forward, as well. These two communities are beginning to look down the road, look at the future and grow their communities in, what is hoped to be, positive steps. Community growth and betterment is only possible, however, with help, feedback and input during the critical stages of developing comprehensive plans.

Restoring Accountability in the Government

by Rep. Adrian Smith

Holding federal agencies accountable is a key responsibility of Congress. Unfortunately, the Obama administration has complicated these efforts by ignoring the Constitution’s separation of powers, bypassing the American people’s elected representatives, and taking unilateral executive action. Despite these challenges, Congress is working to restore accountability in government.

Building Brighter Futures for Nebraska’s Youth

by Governor Pete Ricketts

As I travel the state, ag producers, manufacturers, and small business owners tell me that one of their greatest barriers to growing their operations is recruiting the right talent with the right skills. The center-pivot industry needs irrigation technicians. Manufacturers face a shortage of welders.

Have We Sent Lawmaking Down A Slippery Slope?

By J.L. Schmidt
Statewide ballot initiatives have been allowed in Nebraska for more than 100 years. There are 21 other states that allow such initiatives brought about by the petition process. Since 1912 there have been 69 such measures put before voters and roughly a third of them have been successful. Nebraska’s unique one-house legislature was created by a successful resolution approved by voters in 1934. Likewise, the length of service by those elected senators was limited to two terms by the initiative process.

Maybe You CAN Go Home Again

by J.L. Schmidt

I set out on the six-hour drive with great expectations. I was going to see friends, catch up on their lives and share tidbits of the past 50 years. It was to be a time of homecoming and celebration. I knew the old hometown would be somewhat familiar, but perhaps a little strange since I hadn’t been there for years. Then thoughts of Thomas Wolfe’s epic, “You Can’t Go Home Again,” hit me.

Gov. Pete Ricketts: “A Great Nebraska Tradition”

by Governor Pete Ricketts

This week, Nebraskans across our state are converging on Grand Island for the Nebraska State Fair which runs through September 7th. Since 1868, Nebraskans have gathered together to celebrate our state’s agriculture industry, enjoy unique entertainment, and discover the latest products our state’s entrepreneurs offer. In recent years since the fair’s move to Grand Island from Lincoln, it has continued to grow, flourish, and highlight the very best of Nebraska.

Fall Season is Upon Us

As of late, it’s been getting chillier by the day, especially in the morning and in the evening when the sun starts dipping below the hills. Fall season sort of sprung on us this year, and while I am not a fan of the colder weather that’s sure to come, I am a fan of what fall brings.

Marty Lane...

Just the title alone, some of you might be saying to yourself, “Oh my, what’s Duncan got going on in his head this week?” Well, in all actuality, while having some downtime Monday night before hitting the sack, my mind was running full of moments in life that really have formed me as the person I have become.
