A True Honor...

You know, from time to time in life, I’ve had the luxury of covering and following some pretty special events and people. This past Friday night, during perhaps the longest banquet  I’ve ever sat through, came another special event.

LAWMAKERS SHOW INDEPENDENCE, DRAW WRATH OF SOME COLLEAGUES

A friend told me he thought this was the worst legislative session he can remember. The Governor said that lawmakers are out of touch with the people who elected them. One senator called his colleagues “spineless wimps.” Another said he would work against the re-election of every senator who voted to repeal the death penalty. Really?

‘Veterans cannot suspend death’

One of The American Legion’s more recent victories helped restore the burial of veterans in one of our nation’s overseas cemeteries located on what used to be Clark Air Base in the Philippines. It is the final resting place for more than 8,600 U.S. veterans and dependents, including Philippine Scouts, who fought for the U. S. Army when the country was still an American territory.

Congress Should Require the Postal Service to Report on Quality of Rural Mail Service

WASHINGTON—The National Newspaper Association has again called for measurement of on-time delivery of rural mail. Appearing in a May 19 roundtable hosted by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, NNA Chief Executive Officer and General Counsel Tonda F. Rush said Congress should follow the maxim that “what gets measured gets done.”

LETTER TO DISTRICT #38

One of my top legislative objectiv es during my term in the Nebraska Legislature is sustaining the vitality of rural communities.  griculture and the rural communities thatsupport it are the economic engine of Nebraska. This past session I have focused my efforts on issues that support our rural communities. Although just the beginning, I am proud of a number of successful initiatives I was able to be involved in during my inaugural session to promote rural communities. I introduced LB 318, which was included in the main budget and forwarded this week to the Governor for signature. LB 318 seeks to appropriate funds to the state’s economic development districts. Many in District 38 are well acquainted with the work of the South Central Economic Development  District as a valuable regional resources to provide planning, community, and economic  development to local governments that

Don’t get me wrong. I still believe in the one-house legislature. I am, however, troubled  when the Executive Branch tries to act like the second house. The theme of this year’s Legislature seems to be drafting bills that will survive a filibuster AND a potential gubernatorial veto. That means a bill has to garner at least 33 “yes” votes to support a cloture motion (to cease debate) or to override a potential veto from the newgovernor

As I embark on the end of six years working for you, our readers of the Clay County News, I caught myself pondering what has taken place during these past six years and what I’ve learned about the area that I certainly enjoy calling home.

Conquering Through Change

On April 27, the Sandy Creek journalism class competed in the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) State Journalism competition in Norfolk, NE. The students have been working all year to produce submissions and prepare for events at state. The journalism class had a total of 14 students that competed in a variety of events. Overall, they had 23 submissions that contributed to a runner-up finish. Krista Johnson, who competed in editorial cartooning and sports/action photography, said, “I loved the atmosphere of state journalism. It was a great experience to be there, and it was a great opportunity to go and be able to compete against other talented students.”

Game in Progress for SC Journalism

From day one, we, the Sandy Creek journalism students, were already hard at work preparing to publish the school yearbook. This year, we voted on the theme “Game Over,” which integrates popular imagery from vintage video games. The layouts feature graphics from classic games like Mario, Donkey Kong, Pac Man and Tetris. We wanted to make this yearbook unique and give it a fun vibe. “Creating the yearbook theme was really time consuming, but it was fun to see how all the layouts fit together. The last three years, I have been a part of the graphics team in journalism. It’s taught me to appreciate all the time that goes into not only the yearbook, but other graphics projects as well,” said senior Natasha Anderson.

Postal Delivery Service Needs Major Overhaul on a National Level

You’re going to find me a pretty unhappy camper this week! We received a handful of calls and emails this week about several “lost papers.” This certainly hasn’t been the first time, and it won’t be the last time, I am quite certain, because of the real issues at hand here.
