Thousands of participants gathered for the 46th annual March of Life in Washington D.C. Jan. 18, one of which was Sutton Public School senior Nathan Drudik.

Drudik first heard about the march when Jeff Schinstock, director of Youth Ministry in the Lincoln Diocese, visited CCD at the Sutton Catholic Church the first week of December 2018, explaining great opportunities youth could do for their church.

Following Schinstock’s visit, Drudik thought more about the trip, eventually deciding to go.

“I thought, maybe I should go to this; it’ll be cool,” he said.

A little more than a month later, Jan. 16, Drudik and several other students were loading a bus at St. Cecilia in Hastings to start their 26-hour journey to D.C.

With the beginning of the 106th Legislature, Clay County’s own Dave Murman takes over as Senator of the 38th District, replacing John Keuhn, who didn’t run for a second term last year.

Murman, who with his family operates a family farm near Glenvil, defeated Marsha Fangmeyer of rural Kearney County to gain the District 38 seat.

A 1971 Sandy Creek High School graduate, Murman began his role as Senator of District 38 officially when the Nebraska Legislature convened on Wednesday, Jan. 9.

During his run for the seat to represent the 38th District, Murman shared that his top priorities are to substantially lower property taxes, while maintaining quality education and fairer funding for our schools, to encourage economic development, especially in relations to agriculture and to strengthen main street and local communities.

“She cares, and it shows.”

This phrase, plucked from one of the five letters nominating Cheryl Brockman for Clay County News’ sixth annual Person of the Year, sums up the Deweese woman fittingly. It is evident in all that she does, in how she raises her children and supports the communities that she calls home, that what drives Brockman’s life is a single truth—that she cares.

“Cheryl donates her time to so many things,” according to another nomination letter, “and I believe that she has gone over and above for any organization out there.”

Humble doesn’t even begin to describe Brockman, who doesn’t see herself as doing anything out of the ordinary.

“I’m very honored,” Brockman said about being named 2018 Person of the Year, “but I definitely don’t think it’s necessary, because our communities are filled with people who are eager to help all the way around.”

Discussion on hiring a second full-time officer drove the Harvard City Council meeting Tuesday, Jan. 8.

Harvard Police Chief Wayne Alley reported there is not enough time to complete everything he’s required to do.

With a large amount of cases occurring, which all require a report written, and the fact Alley cannot be on duty 24/7, he asked the council to consider bringing another full-time officer on board.

Although the amount of cases happening over the years has declined, Alley reported there were 87 cases in 2018, and he’s already begun the year with some.

Some council members were on the fence about hiring another officer, but recognized the need Alley reported on and the number of cases coming up.
