Sandy Creek is hoping to be the latest school in Clay County to bring on the Beef in Schools program, joining Sutton Public Schools in this statewide Nebraska Cattlemen initiative.

If the SC Beef Boosters is able to garner enough support by Dec. 31, Sandy Creek’s students would have not just a new high school to greet them in the second semester, but also the regular opportunity to eat local beef in their school lunches.

“Our students will get to experience locally raised beef in their meals at least once, if not twice, a week during the school year,” Dawn Caldwell, Edgar producer helping to head up the SC Beef Boosters, said.

Monday, Dec. 3, Sutton’s downtown will be busy with families moving from one event to another, all for the annual Parade of Lights.

This year’s festivities will begin at 4 p.m. with a vendor and craft show at the Sutton Community center, followed by children’s ornament decorating at the library and kids cookie decorating at the bakery from 4:30-6 p.m.

Beginning at 5 p.m., the Sutton Volunteer Fire Department will have an open house complete with free hotdogs, cups of chili, coffee, and hot chocolate.

The effects of over-exercising; a stress-free elementary math lesson; how to diagnose a transmission problem; and starting a farrier business are just a sampling of the 48 topics to be covered by high school student presentations on Dec. 5 from 11:50 a.m. -3:30 p.m., at Sandy Creek High School.

The public is encouraged to join the audience as Sandy Creek juniors and seniors give presentations about what they’ve learned during this past semester in South Central Unified’s NCAPS program.

Warmer-than-usual weather kicked off the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, reaching a maximum of 63 degrees on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 22), keeping relatively low wind speeds and gusts of 16 and 29 mph, respectively.

Nov. 23 and 24 continued with warmer temperatures, staying in the lower and upper 40s; however, wind speeds and gusts began to climb, hitting a high of 29 mph (speeds) and 37 mph (gusts).

Despite the welcoming warmth, weather stations forcasted blizzard conditions to end the weekend, expecting between 2 and 4 inches to hit eastern Nebraska.

Something needs to be done to help Edgar’s city water, but the options are thin.

The Edgar City Council voiced resentment during its monthly meeting on Nov. 13 at not having more freedom of choice if it wants to take advantage of a USDA grant that would pay 75 percent of the cost to fix its nitrate situation.

“It’s hard to give up free money,” Edgar’s Mayor Brad Brennfoerder said. “The last thing we want to do is break the city.”

The problem is, the USDA grant is contingent on running a pipeline between Edgar and Fairfield—an unpopular idea as of now.

The Edgar City Council has long been considering how to address the high nitrate levels in its city water. State regulations require nitrate levels in drinking water to stay below 10 parts per million. Edgar’s nitrate level sits at 11 to 12 parts per million, according to the city’s engineer Mike Schultes.

Harvard’s One Act team took home third place during the TVC One Act competition Tuesday, Nov. 13, while at the SNC competition at Centennial, Sutton took home sixth place, with Sandy Creek earning ninth.

At the TVC competition, Deshler took home the champion title, with Kenesaw coming in as the runner-up.

During the SNC competition, David City was named champion, while Fillmore Central earned runner-up.

Several students from each school were named outstanding actors/ actresses.

Fairfield’s main street building with the iconic landscape mural painted on the south side is about to be posted for sale, but potential buyers beware that a purchase comes with stipulations.

The former City of Fairfield office, located at 401 D Street, has some issues—the least being a bad roof. But the last thing the Fairfield City Council wants to see happen is for the building to fall into further disrepair.

The City Council deliberated possible solutions at its monthly meeting on Nov. 12 in the city auditorium.

City superintendent Jim Moore opened the discussion with a report on the condition of the old city office building, explaining the condition of the roof and how that is further compromising an already deteriorated indoor environment.
