Friesen, Buescher present on time spent at Girls State

Adilynn Friesen and Taylor Buescher, both of Sutton, were the honorary speakers at the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary Meeting, July 23.

They were chosen by the women’s auxiliary to attend the 2018 Cornhusker Girls’ State this summer, which was June 3-9.

Clay Center Council reviews city equipment rates

During the July 17 Clay Center City Council meeting, members discussed nuisance properties and equipment rates.

Levi Adam, with SCEED, gave a nuisance abatement presentation, suggesting the council rescind three properties and post-pone two property. The council did approve the two suggestions.

13th annual Harvard Veterans Memorial Car Show is Saturday

Harvard’s 13th annual Veterans Memorial Car Show is set for Saturday, July 28, beginning at 8 a.m., with the UCC 5K/1- Mile Run/Walk, at the City Park.

The cost is $10 per person and all proceeds go to the People Project (see more information on pg. 8A).

Following the run will be the 10th annual horseshoe tournament (sign-up is from 10-11 a.m.); cost is $10 per person, with a top four payout.

No injuries reported in Sutton truck fire

Sutton PD and Fire and Rescue responded to a single truck fire Wednesday, July 18. Sutton Officer Taylor Jacobs said the driver noticed flames under the floorboards while driving west past the Sutton Aquatic Center. In order to get the truck away from kids, the driver was able to make it across Saunders Avenue before being forced to leave the cab, Jacobs reported. When the driver exited the truck, the vehicle rolled backward before coming to a stop halfway on the street and curb. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The truck was a total loss and no injuries were reported.

Harvard Council names Alley police chief

Discussion takes place on Harvard Rest Haven, smoking rules at park

Harvard’s City Council approved the hiring of Wayne Alley as the Harvard Police Chief during its Tuesday, July 10 meeting.

Alley had been working part-time for the police department prior to his promotion to chief. The appointment by the council was unanimously approved with a starting rate of $45,700 per year, on a six-month probation period, with the additional stipulation of making an effort to move into or around Harvard.

‘Barn Doors, Dirt Floors’ theme of fair

Clay County Fair kicked off Wednesday

Clay County’s Fair starts today, Wednesday, July 11, kicking off the “Barn Doors and Dirt Floors” theme with the 4-H Poultry Show at 11 a.m. Beginning at 2:30 p.m., is the 4-H Rabbit Show, followed by the 4-H Bucket Calf Show at 6:30 p.m. Starting at 7:30 p.m., will be the kids tractor pull, first-ever BBQ contest, and redneck golf.

On Thursday, July 12, events begin early with the 4-H Swine Show at 8:30 a.m., followed by the 4-H Horse Show at 11:30 a.m.
