Clay Center’s May 15 city council meeting was short and to the point.

Council members approved the use of fireworks at the conclusion a wedding in July, with stipulations, within the city limits. The council unanimously approved the use of the fireworks as long as the wedding party had prior approval from the fair board.

Superintendent Kevin Thompson reported sprinklers in the park have been reset; there will be a walk-through to learn the timers and settings.

Family and friends alike looked on Saturday afternoon as the 132nd class of Sutton Public Schools took its final steps as seniors in the school system, beginning at 4 p.m.

Following the processional and music from the Sutton High School Choir, in which the group, directed by Mrs. Sandra Quiring, sang “May the Road Rise Up” and “Maybe Someday,” secondary principal, Brandy Thompson introduced to the audience the 2018 valedictorian and salutatorian.

Repairs, structure burnings around town and two citizen concerns were the main discussions during Monday night’s Fairfield City Council.

City Clerk Allyson Peshek reported the electronic sign is having issues with displaying information. The sign is old and is showing signs of aging within the wiring and on the outside. The council suggested finding someone to come look at the sign, but possibly be thinking of replacing the sign in the future.

Sutton High School’s Career and Technical Education Department has been named the 2018 Nebraska Career Education Outstanding Secondary Program, as announced by the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) recently.

The Sutton CTE program is led by Nancy Schlautman, Sharon Zoucha, Steve Ramer, Zach Parrish, Brandy Thompson, Shawna Wheeler and Jesse Bower.

Before the hustle and bustle of families take over the gym, there’s a number of people preparing for the first big step in a student’s life—graduation.

Prior to Harvard’s graduation on Saturday, chairs and decorations were set up in the gym, and cues and the process of graduation was run through.

Tuesday morning marked the tearing down of the former movie theatre building in Sutton. The older building’s destruction was prompted by the affect it was causing to a neighboring property. The former Four Star Insurance building was also torn down.

Clay Center’s Community Club hosted a town hall meeting Tuesday for Clay Center City Council, county supervisor and county sheriff candidates for the May primary election.

Community Club President Jessie Anderson directed the meeting, having each candidate approach the podium to speak briefly about who they are and why they decided to run for their respective position.

A welcomed rise in temperature occurred over the weekend, reaching 67 degrees Saturday and boasting a high of 81 on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Hastings.

However, despite the warm temps, wind speeds and gusts also rose, causing minor damage, specifically on Sunday.

Saturday’s wind speeds only reached 20 mph, with wind gusts hitting 27 mph, heading toward the southeast.
