Ball field maintenance was one of the main discussions during the April 10 Harvard Council meeting, with the council coming to the conclusion that the entire field needs updates.

The equipment, including helmets, safety gear, and bats, is old—more than 15 years—and the scoreboard doesn’t work in many areas, and the ice machine is broken again.

It was also noted that the field will need to be combed over, as an abundance of stickers have grown over it.

Several students from Sandy Creek and one student from Harvard will be heading to the NSAA State Journalism Competition on Monday, April 23, at Northeast Community College in Norfolk.

Jace Pelotte, of Harvard, earned a way to state for his sports news coverage of the six-man football championship.

Doupnik, Shackelford heading to national leadership conference in June

Harvard’s FBLA students found success during the annual FBLA State Leadership Conference April 5-7.

Kylie Doupnik earned a spot as a national qualifier, taking first place in Impromptu Speaking. She also earned second place in Parliamentary Procedure Individual Test, and an honorable mention in Economics.

Their voices melt together in a euphony of sounds that echo in and out of the gym and hallways.

Capturing the audiences attention is easy once the guitarist begins to thrum the cords and the drums are beat in a melodic tune.

The Voices of Zambia do just that—capture the audience’s attention with little effort as they move from one gospel to the next. While some are performed in English, a majority of the familiar hymns have taken on a new language, a new rhythm, and a new tone.

Design standards, application procedures featured for Sutton’s downtown enhancement program

With the wheels in motion to begin the process of the downtown enhancement challenge grant program, the March 28 issue of the Clay County News laid out the overview of the program, as well as the program objectives. Additionally, the project area was shared to those applicants who would be eligible for the challenge grant funding through Sutton’s LB840 program.

This week, program features prove to be standards that are desired, the review and approval process and the application procedures for those that choose to utilize the program.

Community members gathered Tuesday, March 27, to kickoff a think tank session to begin putting plans together for Sutton’s Sesquicentennial Celebration, set to take place in 2021.

JJ McKenzie, president of the Sutton Area Chamber of Commerce, called for the meeting to begin gathering thoughts, ideas and begin making some plans for the 150th celebration for the community.

During the Sutton City Council meeting, Monday, March 12, council members approved a new challenge grant opportunity to Sutton business owners, within a blighted area in the downtown business district to help revitalize and enhance Sutton’s aging buildings as part of a new downtown enhancement effort.

Funding options for the program will come out of the local options sales tax program, also known as LB840 funds, with $30,000 being earmarked for the first year of the program.

Sutton’s Community Center was beaming with energy Saturday evening, as community members and friends gathered for the annual Sutton Area Chamber of Commerce Banquet.

During the banquet, as in years past, two awards were given out—Friends of the Community and Volunteer of the Year.

This year’s Friends of the Community recipient was Tom Carraher, the former UPS driver that served Sutton for three decades.

“This person has been such a blessing to Sutton and the surrounding area, even though they don’t reside here. The joy they bring to each person they come in contact with and the smile on their face at all times, no matter what, is nothing short of extraordinary,” Shannon Mendez, Sutton Chamber executive director, said.
