Robert “Bob” Hajny

Clay Center resident Robert J. “Bob” Hajny, 83, passed away Friday, Dec. 3, 2021, at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings.

Rosary will be 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 9, at Butler Volland Chapel in Hastings. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10, at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Deweese with Father Corey Harrison officiating. Burial will be at St. Martin’s (Loucky) Cemetery in Deweese. Visitation will be 1-8 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home and one hour prior to service at the church. Memorials may be given to the family for a memorial to be established later. Private condolences may be sent to the family at www.lbvfh.com. Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home & Cremation Center is serving the family.

Barbara Jeanene McLaughlin Stevens died in her home in Ada, OK, on Oct. 27, 2021, with her family at her side.

Jeanene was born May 26, 1932, on her parents’, William Gayle and Ruby Jane (French) McLaughlin, wheat and corn farm 9 miles south of Sutton. She was the third of four children, Betty Marie, William Edward (Billy), and Gwenda Gayle.

Jeanene enjoyed a rich childhood growing up in the country. Jeanene loved to help on the farm with milking, collecting eggs, driving the tractor, as she loved the beauty and inspiration of nature. She attended Grove Country School for her first eight years, which was across the road from her home, then attended Sutton High School. During this time, she would often spend some of the school week in town with her much loved grandparents, Edward and Dora Smith French. Jeanene was the great-granddaughter of Luther French, a founding father of Sutton.

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Alana Nuss, who passed away Saturday, Nov. 27, 2021, in her home outside of Sutton at the age of 72, from complications of surgery.

Per Alana’s wishes, there will be no visitation or formal ceremony. Instead, a celebration of life open house for family and friends will be Thursday, Dec. 2, 2021, from 5–7 p.m., at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton.

Sutton resident Leoma R. Sisel passed away Sunday, Nov. 21, 2021, at the Sutton Community Home in Sutton at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 4 days.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 29, 2021, at Emmanuel Reformed Church in Sutton, with Rev. Carl Gobelman officiating. Interment will follow at the Sutton Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, from 1 – 7 p.m., at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton. A luncheon will be served by the Emmanuel Church Ladies in the basement of the church.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Emmanuel Reformed Church or the Sutton Christian School both in Sutton.

Nancy Brokaw

Nancy Deanne Brokaw, 75, of Clinton, IA passed away at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House on Friday, Nov. 19, 2021. Funeral services took place at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 24, at Lemke Funeral Homes–South Chapel. Burial was at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Lemke Funeral Homes in Clinton, IA assisted the family with arrangements.

Nancy was born Feb. 14, 1946, in Hastings, the daughter of Dwight and Ruth (Heinz) Nuss. She was a graduate of Sutton High School and furthered her education by acquiring a specialized certificate in Secretarial Administration at the Lincoln School of Commerce.

Nancy was united in marriage to Michael “Mike” Brokaw on Sept. 16, 1967, in Saronville-together for 54 years.

Nancy worked as an Executive Secretary for the Animal Science Department at the University of Nebraska. Upon starting a family, she concluded her career there and became a loving mother.

She was a member of local AMVET’S Post 28, Women’s Auxiliary.

Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 21, 2021, at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton, with the Free German Reformed Salem Church Elders officiating. Interment followed at the Free German Reformed Salem Church Cemetery near Sutton. Memorial contributions may be direct

Edmund was born April 2, 1930, in Fillmore County, to Albert and Margareta (Griess) Huber. He was a veteran of the Korean War. His service dates were December 1952 to December 1954. He served honorably in the Army, achieving the rank of Corporal.

Clay Center resident Norma Jean (Ockinga) Burklund, 79, was born May 10, 1942, and passed away Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2021, the day after her 62nd wedding anniversary, from Covid-19 complications.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clay Center, with Pastor Patti Byrne officiating. Interment followed at the Clay Center Cemetery in Clay Center.

Norma Jean (Ockinga) Burklund was born in Spring Ranch, Nebraska to Fred and Mabel (Davis) Ockinga on May 10, 1942, the second of four children. She passed into the arms of Jesus on Nov. 17, 2021, from Covid-19 complications.

Harold Glenn Douglas, 87, of Huntsville passed away Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021, at home in Arkansas. He was born Sept.

16, 1934 in Russellville, AR to Raymond Douglas and Carmel Pickene.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings.

Survivors include his son, Harold Douglas JR; three daughters, Teri Luckie, Gina Zlomke and Lori Kauk; brother, Larry Douglas; sister, Shirley Douglas; many grandchildren; great grandchildren and other family and friends.

A funeral service will be at 11:30, Monday, Nov. 22, 2021, at Fayetteville National Cemetery in Arkansas. Funeral services are under the direction of Madison County Funeral Service of Huntsville, AR.

Burial will be at the Fairfield Cemetery immediately following the funeral service and lunch to be served at the church immediately following the graveside service.
