Jade R. Schoneberg

Jade Ryan Schoneberg was born May 10, 1977, in Denver, CO, to John and Suzanne (Zimmerman) Schoneberg. He grew up in the small town of Sutton, and attended Sutton Public Schools. A cowboy from the start, he knew from an early age what he wanted to do with his life. Trading horses became his passion when he made a profit on his first pony, sold at 6 years old. For the rest of his life he would love a good horse, a good horse sale, a good trade and the many lasting friendships made along the way. When not at a horse sale, his favorite place to be was at the barn working with his dad. He also worked in the ag industry, the last five years for Nutrien Ag Solutions.

Shaping the person you are today

Article Image Alt Text

By Ashley D. Swanson

Everything up to this point in your life has shaped you in some way. That’s what I believe, anyway.

And the amazing part about all of it is how much you don’t realize what shaped you and how it shaped you.

Not everything was a monumental point in your life, but tiny details often leave lasting impressions.

Additional flood assistance may be available for Nebraskans

LINCOLN—At the request of Governor Pete Ricketts, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended the incident period in which disaster-caused damaged may be covered.

The presidential disaster declaration, issued March 21, originally covered the period from March 9 to April 1.

With the extension, additional uninsured damage sustained through July 14 may now be eligible for FEMA assistance and U.S. Small Business Administration low-interest loans.

Fall lawn care reminders

Article Image Alt Text

VIEWS FROM VANDEWALLE

The kids are back in school, the first Husker football game will start in a couple of weeks–it is officially fall! During this time of year, it is an ideal time to seed the cool season turfgrasses tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass. For all of you horticulture enthusiasts, be sure to follow Nicole Stoner, extension educator focused in horticulture’s blog at plantsandpests.wordpress.com, or go to Nebraska Extension’s Hort Update newsletter at hortupdate.unl.edu.

This week I took some of the lawn tips from the Aug. 19 edition of Hort Update on site preparation for lawn seeding or over seeding. For success, seedbed preparation is important to assure seed to soil contact.

Putting life into perspective....

Article Image Alt Text

By Tory Duncan

Time and time again, I learn with each week, life can throw curveballs at you. One can either take one for the team, get hit by the curveball and take the easy pass to first base, or one can choose to swelter in the heat of things.

This past week has been a rollercoaster ride, but by the end of the week, my own issues are minimal when I took a trip west...with a touchy stomach no less.

It was a planned trip to head out to Arapahoe and have a final weekend of sanity...a get away if you will, before the school year totally kicks in!

BY ASHLEY D. SWANSON

Sixteen people gathered at Edgar’s Fire Hall Thursday, Aug. 15, for the start of a three-month EMT training class.

Thursday’s training served as an outline for the class, with direction given by instructors Sandra Schendt and DeeAnn Janssen, of Central Community College-Hastings.

During the training, students will learn hands-on skills, read through all the required materials of information, and work close with others throughout the county.

Janssen explained Thursday how they [students] weren’t just taking the class for their own squads. Mutual aid occurs more often than not, especially in a rural county such as Clay. Going through the course and taking the final exam will benefit themselves, their communities, and each other.

Co. Board hears complaints of irrigators spraying on Harvard-area roads

BY RITA BRHEL

This has been a tough year for county roads, but it’s not helped by improperly managed irrigation pivots.

The Clay County Board of Supervisors heard complaints from several people about the condition of gravel roads near Harvard during the board’s regular meeting on Aug. 12, at the courthouse in Clay Center.

“I just want good roads, reasonable ones anyway,” Dale Hasseloh who lives east of Harvard, said. “It’s to the point where something’s got to be done. It’s just terrible.”
