Of the special services offered, the most recent is Grand Island Pain Relief Center, which has changed the way they see their patients in terms of treatment.

SCAL Field Day features hail simulator research

Article Image Alt Text

RITA BRHEL | CLAY COUNTY NEWS

Researcher Justin McMehan discusses the effects of SCAL’s hail simulator (seen at the right) on soybeans.

Few scenarios are as disappointing in farming as a long-awaited rain accompanied by damaging hail. But shredded leaves aren’t a sure sign of a lost yield. Corn and soybeans can take quite a beating and still go on to be viable crops. “The best management decision is to let that crop respond,” Justin McMechan, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension crop protection and cropping systems specialist, said. He presented one of the sessions during South Central Agricultural Laboratory’s Field Day, Aug. 1, at the facility located just southwest of Harvard.

August kicks off the start of the school year and the beginning of fall, but this year was the end of a pool that’s served a community since 1958.

Following months of planning, the passing of two propositions during the November 2018 election, and continuously working to raise funds for the construction of a new aquatic center, the Clay Center community said farewell to their aging pool Aug. 1.

IN THE POSTAL KNOW

Article Image Alt Text

Ozenbaugh

The “Dog Days of Summer” have definitely been upon us. I hope everyone is coping with the heat, especially those who work outdoors. I know the USPS stresses to our carriers to stay hydrated (drinking LOTS of water) and taking breaks (either in the shade or in air-conditioned buildings). Everyone should be familiar with the signs of heat illnesses. Do you know them?

Heat exhaustion—faint or dizzy, excessive sweating, cool, pale clamming skin, nausea or vomiting, rapid, weak pulse, and muscle cramps.

Heat stroke—throbbing headache, no sweating, body temperature above 103, red, hot and dry skin, nausea or vomiting, rapid & strong pulse, and may lose consciousness.

An undying love for books

Article Image Alt Text

By Ashley D. Swanson

In my attempt to reduce time on social media, and reduce screen time on my phone altogether, I started reading again.

Honestly, I couldn’t remember the last time I read a book prior to the end of June, into July. Which is sad, because I adore reading and haveduring my high school years—spent an entire summer reading in between working.

And I have a ton of books laying around my house—I even have my own miniature library...which got too big for the mini library and spread out into the living room and my room, but I digress.
