Harvard grads thank others for the memories

Before the hustle and bustle of families take over the gym, there’s a number of people preparing for the first big step in a student’s life—graduation.

Prior to Harvard’s graduation on Saturday, chairs and decorations were set up in the gym, and cues and the process of graduation was run through.

Sutton downtown property’s razed

Tuesday morning marked the tearing down of the former movie theatre building in Sutton. The older building’s destruction was prompted by the affect it was causing to a neighboring property. The former Four Star Insurance building was also torn down.

Sutton boys win own invite with 215 points

The Sutton boys’ team won the Sutton hosted track meet by more than 100 points, Friday, May 4.

The boys accounted for 215 points and the second- place Milford team scored 109.

The boys team accounted for eight first-place finishes, including all three relays.

Sappy graduation column continues

Sorry, but I’m going to talk about graduation again, mainly because there are two people in my life that need to be recognized.

My twin cousins, Michael and Hannah, will be graduating from Deshler High School Saturday, May 12. They will be the second/third people in two generations to graduate from high school.

35 years ago this month...it goes so fast

You know it’s pretty amazing how fast 35 years can blow past you! This month 35 years ago, as a spry young 6 foot, 6 inch 185-pound senior in high school, I had the luxury of walking across the stage, saying my goodbyes to Shelton High School and, in many ways, Shelton the community, as I had no idea at the time what path my life would take.

I knew I wanted to be in the newspaper business, that’s what I grew up with, that’s what I knew, and yes, I knew quite a lot about the printing business, as well, just because of the upbringing that I had with my parents.

Deadline nears to complete 2017 census of agriculture

The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is reminding Nebraska farmers and ranchers that the window is closing on the opportunity to participate in the 2017 Census of Agriculture. To date, NASS has received more than 1.5 million completed questionnaires, but both the national and Nebraska return rates are currently lower than at this point in the 2012 Census process.

NASS is encouraging Nebraska producers who have not returned their completed Census questionnaires to do so as soon as possible to avoid phone and in-person follow-up.

CC Comm. Club hosts town hall meeting

Clay Center’s Community Club hosted a town hall meeting Tuesday for Clay Center City Council, county supervisor and county sheriff candidates for the May primary election.

Community Club President Jessie Anderson directed the meeting, having each candidate approach the podium to speak briefly about who they are and why they decided to run for their respective position.

Damaging winds blow over county, state

A welcomed rise in temperature occurred over the weekend, reaching 67 degrees Saturday and boasting a high of 81 on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Hastings.

However, despite the warm temps, wind speeds and gusts also rose, causing minor damage, specifically on Sunday.

Saturday’s wind speeds only reached 20 mph, with wind gusts hitting 27 mph, heading toward the southeast.
