Two Harvard journalism students compete for hardware

BY MELISSA WHITEFOOT

Seven state champions, two state runners-up, along with a slew of other placers, earned the Sandy Creek Journalism team a third place title at the state journalism competition Monday.

Two Harvard students, Jace Pelott and Ashley Nierman, also competed at state journalism; however, they did not medal.

Harvard adviser Brandy Reutzel said although the duo did not medal, they should be proud of themselves, especially since they were the only freshmen competing in their respective events, against 12 others, most of which were upperclassmen.

Final Relay For Life bittersweet

By Ashley D. Swanson

Sometimes it’s funny how things happen in life. For example, how I went from being the “new kid on the block” in December 2014, and walking through the doors of the Clay Center Senior Center to cover a meeting, to being able to call myself a member of one of the greatest groups I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know.

I’m not exactly sure on the date, but I know when I went to the Relay For Life meeting at the beginning of 2015, I wasscared stiff, as I was still new, and when I walked through those doors I was greeted by a decently-sized group of people (none of which I knew).

A year of great moments and memories

By Tory Duncan

Once in a great while we all go through moments in life that just leaves a lasting impact. That has been the case for me this past year as I served as the Nebraska Press Association’s advertising service’s president.

The experience impacted me in so many ways, but in the biggest way, would be the impact that the Clay County News staff has allowed my service to our 180 member newspapers throughout the State of Nebraska.

Nebraska Extension offers May field crop scout training

Lincoln—A May 9 Nebraska Extension training course is scheduled for industry representatives and corn and soybean growers wanting to learn how to better manage corn and soybean pests.

“The training is designed for entry-level scouts who are working for crop consultants, industry agronomists or farm service centers in Nebraska and neighboring states,” said Keith Glewen, Nebraska Extension educator. Glewen says the training course is also ideal for growers who scout their own fields or are interested in improving productivity, as well as for students being employed by agribusinesses.

Ball field on Harvard Council docket

Article Image Alt Text

BY ASHLEY D. SWANSON

Ball field maintenance was one of the main discussions during the April 10 Harvard Council meeting, with the council coming to the conclusion that the entire field needs updates.

The equipment, including helmets, safety gear, and bats, is old—more than 15 years—and the scoreboard doesn’t work in many areas, and the ice machine is broken again.

It was also noted that the field will need to be combed over, as an abundance of stickers have grown over it.
