Fields selected for NSAA student advisory

Harvard’s sophomore Ellie Fields has been selected as one of the eight new members to the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) Student Advisory Committee. The new members will begin serving their junior years, 2018-19, and continue through their senior years, 2019-20.

According to a press release from the NSAA, the members were selected from more than 80 applicants and selected based on the representation of gender, school classification, minority representation and participation in interscholastic athletics/ activities.

Teach kids the value of hard work

Let me begin by saying every parent is different when it comes to parenting their kids. I understand and truly respect that. However, like many others, I have my own opinions on how kids should be raised, even if I am not a parent myself.

Last Thursday, while driving Loetta to school, we were listening to one of our usual radio stations when the question, “Should kids be paid to finish their homework?” was posed.

Tariffs...a way to depress/ruin an economy

I often times find myself holding back on my thoughts and feelings in some areas, especially on the political stage, but not this week.....

Monday in several news outlets it was shared that President Donald Trump exclaimed, “American farmers are great patriots. They’ll understand we’re doing this for the country. And we’ll make it up to them.”

Farmers sought for on-farm research trials

The Nebraska On-Farm Research Network (NOFRN) is seeking growers who would like to conduct research trials in the 2018 crop season.

NOFRN is designed to help growers test and answer questions they have about products or practices they’re considering implementing on their farm. The on-farm research studies provide a unique opportunity to collaborate with university and industry experts to design and conduct research suited to the farmer’s own operation.

Sutton is putting the wheels in motion

Design standards, application procedures featured for Sutton’s downtown enhancement program

With the wheels in motion to begin the process of the downtown enhancement challenge grant program, the March 28 issue of the Clay County News laid out the overview of the program, as well as the program objectives. Additionally, the project area was shared to those applicants who would be eligible for the challenge grant funding through Sutton’s LB840 program.

This week, program features prove to be standards that are desired, the review and approval process and the application procedures for those that choose to utilize the program.

Sutton Chamber kicks off 150th planning

Community members gathered Tuesday, March 27, to kickoff a think tank session to begin putting plans together for Sutton’s Sesquicentennial Celebration, set to take place in 2021.

JJ McKenzie, president of the Sutton Area Chamber of Commerce, called for the meeting to begin gathering thoughts, ideas and begin making some plans for the 150th celebration for the community.

Huntin’ for eggs in Harvard

Despite the cold temperatures and equally cold winds, several families turned out for the event, scouring the nursing home’s front lawn for the colorful eggs.

Cougars compete at Thayer Central

The Sandy Creek boys’ team earned one point at the Thayer Central Invite Thursday to finish 11th of the 15-team field. The girls’ team also landed 11th but was unable to earn points at the meet.

THE BOYS

In the field events, the Sandy Creek Cougars finished six athletes in the top 15 of three events with senior Hunter Rempe earning the highest spot, eighth in the shot put, throwing 38 feet, 1 inch.

Mustangs win Thayer Central Invite

Sutton boys earn 135 points at Hebron to take team track title

The Sutton Mustangs won the Thayer Central Invite accounting for 135 points. The girls’ team marked 15 points to finish eighth at the meet.

THE BOYS

In the field events, the Mustangs were led by junior Cameron Kleinschmidt, who won the long jump, marking 20 feet. Freshman Cade Wiseman finished third in the long jump, going 18-0.75.

Finishing out a state press role

My term as president of the Nebraska Press Advertising Service (NPAS), one of the two corporations under the Nebraska Press Association, comes to a close here in a few weeks.

The past year, to say the least, has been quite the ride. Lots of changes, a great deal of decisions, but more than anything, a huge amount of learning to be one of two leaders for nearly 180 Nebraska newspapers, both daily and weekly.
