May election to feature several contested races

Combined, there are 475.5 years and 18 days of service from the 36 members of the Edgar Fire and Rescue Departments.

Today, the fire department stands at 130 years old, while the rescue department celebrates being 44 years old.

SC students present at National History Day, six heading to state

National History Day is designed to help students learn how to think like a historian, exhibit their work in an authentic way, and making learning their own thing, according to the Nebraska History Day website.

On Feb. 28, 16 students from Sandy Creek attended the National History Day Contest at Hastings College.

Cardinals finish 15-10 on season

The Harvard Cardinals finished the 2017-18 season with a 15-10 record.

The season started with a loss to Giltner, 48-27, but then took off on a winning streak. The Cardinals defeated Franklin 44-20, Shelton 65-39, Axtell 38-37, Dorchester 47-26, Osceola 41-27 and Grand Island Heartland Lutheran 32-26 before the next loss.

Mustangs round out season 16-8

The Sutton Mustangs finished the 2017-18 season with a 16-8 record.

Sutton started the season on a high note with two wins, against Friend 84-39 and Nebraska Christian 67-35.

Tax policy in the 2018 session

Tax policy is a big area of focus for senators this legislative session for a good reason: It is key to building a pro-growth climate in our state.

Right now, Nebraska’s tax system is in need of an overhaul. According to the Tax Foundation, Nebraska has the 11th highest property taxes in the United States and the 26th highest income taxes. When you look at it another way on a per capita basis, we do not do any better. Local property tax collections rank 12th highest at $1,757 per capita and state income tax collections rank 16th highest at $1,128 per capita. This makes us uncompetitive with surrounding states.

Legislative pay raise? Timing is everything

You get what you pay for.

In the case of Nebraska’s Legislature, several senators and some constituent groups say they don’t think lawmakers are getting paid enough. It’s hard to disagree since the last pay raise was 30 years ago when voters approved an increase from $400 a month to $1,000 a month. Arizona and Nebraska are the only two states to require voter approval.
