Sutton resident, Wayne W. Moore, 87, passed away Monday, March 5, at the Sutton Community Home in Sutton. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Emmanuel Reformed Church in Sutton, with Rev. Joe Vusich officiating. Interment will follow at the Sutton Cemetery with military honors by the Nebraska Naval Honor Guard and the American Legion Post #61, Sutton, NE. Visitation will be Friday, from 1–8 p.m., with the family present from 5–8 p.m., at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton. Memorial contributions may be directed to Fox Hollow Golf Course or the Sutton Christian School. Condolences may be left at www.suttonmemorial.com Wayne W. Moore was born June 3, 1930, in Sutton, to Daniel and Clara (Wahl) Moore. He was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Sutton.

Fairfield Fire, Rescue honors crew at banquet

A packed house fueled this year’s Fairfield Fire and Rescue Banquet Saturday, with the annual pancake and pork sandwich feeds serving hundreds of people from all over Clay County.

Along with the feed, health fair panel, and raffle, there was the annual auction, which brought in some big ticket items such as a football signed by 20 Heisman winners, which raised more than $3,000 toward the Fairfield department.

Sutton Showcase a hit for all ages

Sutton’s annual Showcase, which is hosted in the Sutton Public School Gym, had fun for all ages. While the adults shopped and talked, as seen in the top photo, kids, such as Cadence Swim, left, and Myles Smith, were able to practice their corn husking and get a balloon.

Sutton’s Nuss, 11 others help in Texas on mission trip

Sutton’s Larry T. Nuss traveled with a group of 12 to Orange and Vidor, TX, for a mission trip to help those affect by the hurricane in August.

“I usually go to Louisiana every year for a mission trip and when that group wasn’t going this year, I still wanted to go on a trip, so I was put in connection with this group,” Nuss said.

Sutton caps season with 1 state medalist

The Sutton Mustangs qualified four to the state tournament and finished with one— junior Lee Carlson, 120—on the podium.

Sutton started the season on a strong note, winning the first invitational at Harvard, while placing five in first, two in second, two in third and one in fourth. Lee Carlson, 120; freshman Joe Hinrichs, 126; sophomore Cory Carlson, 138; senior Chandler Stone, 152; and junior James Griess, 160, were champions at their respective weight classes.

Baseball camps to be hosted in Sutton

Scotts Major League camp

The Sutton Legion Baseball will be hosting a Scotts Major League Baseball Pitch Hit & Run competition at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 22 at the Watertower Field in Sutton. Pitch Hit & Run is the official skills competition of MLB.

Boys and girls competing will be divided into four age divisions, 7/8, 9/10, 11/12 and 13/14. They will have a chance to advance through four levels of competition, which could include Team Championships at Major League ballparks and the National Finals during the 2018 MLB All-Star Week.

February state work period in Nebraska

Recently the Senate had a state work period, which meant I could travel across Nebraska and visit with fellow citizens to listen to what’s on their minds. These conversations are what I take back to Washington, and they help me bring our state’s common sense to Congress.

I started my week by stopping by the Nebraska City Public Schools Pioneer Career Academy. It was great visiting with students and seeing the fantastic work they are doing. The highlight of the tour came when the students presented me with two wooden plaques that they had made. It’s great to see these young people refining their skills to become successful and contribute to their community.
