Harvard hosted the annual show choir competition on Wednesday, March 7, with 14 schools competing. At the end of the competing teams, Harvard’s three show choirs—Full Impact, Class Act, and Cardinal & Black—entertained the crowd. Here, Paisley Longoria sings a solo during a performance. Downtown enhancement leads Sutton Council action

Members of the Sutton City Council took action Monday night during their March monthly meeting to move forward with a downtown enhancement plan, passing a resolution that enables the use of LB840 local options sales tax revenues to help downtown businesses to seek financial assistance in an effort to give their properties a facial under a downtown enhancement challenge grant program.

The Sutton downtown enhancement challenge program grants are intended to stimulate private investment into property frontage located in the downtown business district within the city.

Racing begins March 24, 25

JMS kicks off season with spring thaw

Racing at Junction Motor Speedway begins Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25, with the annual Mike Chapin Memorial Spring Thaw.

Racing will begin at 4 p.m. both days. Admission cost $15 for grandstand; students 6 to 12 years old cost $5; and children 5 and under are free. Pit passes on Saturday cost $25 and pit passes on Sunday cost $30.

Stapleman earns All-American honors

Bailey Stapleman, a 2014 Sandy Creek graduate, finished his senior indoor track season at the University of Nebraska—Kearney at the NCAA Division II Championships this weekend.

Stapleman was one of three Lopers who qualified for the championships and the only Loper pole vaulter. He finished seventh in pole vault in Pittsburg, KS, to earn All-American honors.

Mister Rogers: Did you miss out?

After watching the NET special Sunday night regarding Mister Rogers, also known as Fred Rogers, to the kids that are growing up this day and age it really is a misfortune that you didn’t get the privilege to grow up watching his show.

He talked about birth, death, and life. He spoke of divorce and even disarray in life, but he did so in such a way that his demeanor left an impact on you...you learned from his teachings!

IN THE POSTAL KNOW

I wish I knew why the days and weeks go by so fast. Each week I think I’m going to get my article written, and then, whoosh, the deadline passes and I’ve missed another week. Part of the problem this last month has been the preparation for and then the twoweek rural mail count.

I have talked about the rural mail count before, but this year it was a national requirement that ALL rural routes be counted. So in preparation I had to physically ride the route with each of my seven rural carriers. So that was seven days out of my office over a three week period.

Farm and ranch succession transition workshop

Persons of all ages are invited to attend a “Farm and Ranch Estate Planning Workshop” hosted by UNL Extension. This workshop will be Friday, March 23, 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., at Nebraska Extension in Saline County, 306 West Third St., Wilber.

Cost to attend is $20 per farm operation and $10 for each additional family member. Please preregister by Tuesday, March 20, by calling Nebraska Extension in Saline County, 402-821-2151, to ensure that there are enough handouts, food and other materials. The registration fee will include your meal, handouts and presentations.

Faye C. (Cook) Sherlock

Faye Carolyn (Cook) Sherlock, age 80, of Wayne, passed away Tuesday, March 6, at Wakefield Care Center. Memorial services were Saturday, March 10, at 11 a.m., at Journey Christian Church in Wayne. Pastor Troy Reynolds officiating. A luncheon was at the church immediately following the service. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Faye is survived by her husband, Cliff Sherlock of Wayne; children, Lori (Tom) Korth of Omaha; and Michelle Sherlock of Stockton, CA. Grandchildren: Danika (Marie) Schuett of Omaha; and Dana (Alyssa) Schuett of Omaha. Great-grandchildren Alayna and Aaron. Siblings: Wayne (Nancy) Cook of Las Vegas, NV; and Jim (Vivian) Cook of Salina, KS. Faye was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Margaret Cook; siblings, Elson Cook, Donald Cook and MaryAnn (Cook) McClanahan.
