Despite much needed rain that has fallen in much of the area over the course of the past few weeks, many row crop producers have begun the annual planting ritual to kick off the 2017 growing season in Clay County. Sutton will soon be the home of a first of its kind in Clay County, as members of the Sutton City Council approved the purchase of a new four-legged addition to the City of Sutton police force.

K9 Falco, as he is known, is a male German shepherd, born in March of 2015, that will be added to the city police force at a cost of $9,000, which includes a $5,000 deposit for the canine, as well as a $4,000 fee due at least seven days prior to delivery of the specially trained dog.

K9 Falco, according to the contract presented to the city council members, is trained in both patrol and narcotics, to help assist the Sutton police. He will come with a two-year guarantee against any congenital defects, effective from the date of purchase.

Tomlinson, Bower named teachers, advisors of the year

The Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation selected two recipients for the Agriculture Teacher and FFA Advisor of the Year award.

Jesse Bower from Sutton Public Schools and Amy Tomlinson from Sandy Creek Public Schools were honored at the Nebraska FFA Convention on Thursday, April 6, in Lincoln.

The winning advisors received a plaque and a $1,000 donation to their FFA chapters.

The teachers were nominated by their own students and selected based upon their school and community involvement, leadership development in their classroom, and their ability to keep their students involved in agriculture.

Kids head toward the number of eggs set out for Clay Center’s annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 8, at the fairgrounds. Anderson wins 18-19 yard handicap title during April 8 shoot at Crooked Creek Gun Club

Emily Overturf and Derek Drudik led the Sutton girls and boys trap teams during week three of the conference shooting season, held at the Crooked Creek Gun Club, west of Stockham, this past Saturday, April 8.

Overturf led the girls team, hitting on 85 of 100 total targets, while Drudik guided the boys team, also hitting on 85 of 100 total targets.

Overturf was 46-50 from the opening 16-yard mark, then hit on 39 of 50 targets from the 23-yard handicap mark.

Drudik connected on 41 of 50 targets from the 16-yard spot, but followed that up by hitting on 44 of 50 targets from the 21-yard handicap mark.

Four points separated the Blue Hill and Harvard girls track teams in the final standings at the Franklin Invitational, held April 4.

The Lady Bobcats, in the end, held a 106.5-104.5 scoring edge to claim the Franklin title.

In all, the Lady Cardinals gained 11 medals on the track and brought home another seven medals in field event action.
