Constant rain floods county

Clay County, as well as surrounding counties, were swimming in several inches of water following a continuous rain that stretched from Wednesday, May 17, until Saturday, May 20, and then again on Monday, May 22.

As reported by the National Weather Service in Hastings on May 20, Harvard was reported to get 6.01 inches of rain. Other towns in the area, such as Aurora, Hastings and Doniphan, were reported getting 4.30 inches, 5.62 inches, and 6.18 inches, respectively.

Harvard exchange student leaves his mark on state track meet

Adrian Pajaron’s year as a Harvard Cardinal was capped off with a stellar performance in action at the 2017 Nebraska state track and field championships in Omaha this past weekend.

Pajaron, an exchange student from Madrid, Spain, and living with the Mike and Janel Nierman, made his presence know in Omaha during the two-day state meet.

Relays, Peterson, Leach lead Sutton boys at state track meet

Mother Nature had a firm grip over the Omaha Metro area and much of Nebraska over the past weekend, but specifically, at Burke Stadium in Omaha, the weather did little to distract the Sutton boys track team, as the 4x800 and 4x400-meter relay teams battled strong. Tanner Peterson and Trevor Leach added to the final team tally for the Mustangs, as Sutton finished ninth in the final team standings, scoring 21 points, to finish in the top 10.

Norfolk Catholic outscored second place Thayer Central and Central City, as the Knights tallied 57.5 team points, while the Titans and Bison tied for second, with 37 points

Muckin’ around in the mud...gettin’ old

State track, 2017, proved to be a true test of might, fight and figuring out ways to walk through the slick, grayish colored mud at Burke Stadium in Omaha.

Now, none of this is to be pinned on anyone but Mother Nature, it’s not like the Nebraska School Activities Association ordered the weather that thousands of athletes and fans alike had to muck through last Friday and Saturday...and did I forget...newspaper people, as well.

Sutton PD gains new member

A new face is about to step up to duty for the Sutton Police Department, with the addition of a furry fourlegged officer.

Falco is his name, specifically, and K-9 Falco joined the force this past weekend. Falco is a two-year-old german shepherd, born in March of 2015, and comes to Sutton from Medford, NJ and the Absolute Control Dog Training Center (ACDT), at the cost of $9,000.

18 to graduate from Harvard Saturday

Eighteen Harvard Cardinals will take their final steps across the stage Saturday, May 6, as they earn the title, graduates.

The graduation ceremony, which begins at 2 p.m., will feature a senior class welcome from Samantha Martell, as well as a salutatorian address from Madelyn Anderson and a valedictorian address from Hannah Fields.

Students learning to soar at HPS with new drones

Toward the end of the 2016 school year, a few educational departments at Harvard Public School received financial donations from the “Bob Frank” Family in town. Those donations were given to help stimulate the growth of their departments.

Industrial Arts Teacher Charles Conway chose to dedicate the funds to finding new technology ideas, which could stimulate as many students as possible.

Pajaron, Nierman score 70 of Cards’ 106 points at TVC

Another huge day by Adrian Pajaron and Ray Nierman guided the Harvard Cardinals to a runnerup title in the 2017 Twin Valley Conference track and field championships as the Cardinal duo accounted for 70 of the Cardinals 106-team points in action Monday, May 1 at Deshler High School.

Blue Hill would claim the team title over the Cardinals by 19 team points, outscoring Harvard, 125-106, in the final standings.

Win streak is alive and well

For the seventh straight track meet, the Sutton boys track team has earned the top rung in the final standings, this time claiming top honors in the Southern Nebraska Conference track and field championship, held at Centennial High School in Utica, Monday, May 1.

As the leaders of the SNC meet, Sutton outscored second place Heartland High School by 16 points, 90-74.
