In March, the Clay County Sheriff’s office conducted a report on burglaries at two different buildings south of Sutton, and east of Highway 41. Taken were guns and other materials, Clay County Sheriff Jeff Franklin said.

These burglaries were only a small part of a larger operation. In one instance, video footage captured a grey jeep on the property where items were taken.

Digital footprints lead law enforcement to body believed to be Sydney Loofe of Lincoln

Lincoln Police and officials with the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) announced Tuesday morning during a press conference from Lincoln that they believe the body of 24-year-old Sydney Loofe, who disappeared Nov. 15, has been found in rural Clay County.

“Our deepest heartfelt condolences to Sydney’s parents, George and Susie, her brother and sister, her friends, and all that were very fortunate enough to know her,” Randy Thysse, FBI special agent in the Omaha Division, said.

A meer three-tenths points separated the champion and runner-up of the C1-4 District One Act Competition on Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Fillmore Central in Geneva.

Fillmore Central, who performed "The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland," earned the title champion over Sutton's "Peter Pan," with a 2.3 score over Sutton's 2.

Rankings from the judges for Sutton's runner-up placing were a first, second, and third, while Fillmore Central earned two first-place rankings and a third place.

Also competing at the C1-4 competition was Sandy Creek, who performed "Wizard of the Mall," and earned sixth place from each of the three judges, finishing sixth place overall.

Other competitors were Superior, third; Hastings St. Cecilia, fourth; Wilber-Clatonia, fifth; and Doniphan-Trumbull, seventh.

Harvard’s Math Team is continuing its winning ways by earning the Math Bowl Division V Champions at the UNL Math Day. Also earning a top spot in a highly-competitive exam was senior Ray Nierman.

Nierman earned first place in the Probe 1 exam, which gives a student 25 questions of different types of math, everything from the most basic of algebra, to geometry, and on up to trigonometry.

Nierman said they even add problems that students don’t see in math class. Students are given 60 minutes to answer all of the questions, if they choose.

Correctly answering a question awards the student four points; incorrectly answer a question awards no points; and not answering a question awards one point.

Mary and Erik Meyer know first-hand how scary a seizure can be, as their daughter, Sandy Creek ninth grader Mikaela, is prone to them. Monday, Sandy Creek Middle School students were taught by Mary and three members of the Midwest MedAir crew what epilepsy is and how to help someone having a seizure. With the help of pilot Spencer Noack, flight paramedic Albert Hauschild, and flight nurse Sheryl Bakare, Mary talked with the students, explaining what to do and not to do if someone is having a seizure, and what it means to be epileptic. Mary said she hopes that by bringing the MedAir crew to SC, students will have a better understanding of epilepsy and how it affects the patient, as well as the family, but also have a better understanding of the different types of seizures.

Tire store has been a part of Sutton’s business market for 77 years

It has been officially announced that Jason and Crystal Friesen, owners of the Friesen Auto Group, which owns the Friesen Chevrolet and Friesen Ford dealerships in Sutton and Aurora, respectively, have purchased the Cooperative Producers’ Inc. (CPI) Mr. Tire location in Sutton.

The transaction officially took place Monday, with the Friesen’s taking over as owners on Tuesday, Nov. 21.

Sutton’s Dugout Days Carnival for 2018 is about to get bigger, following the booking of the Moore’s Greater Shows of Lyford, TX.

JJ McKenzie, Sutton Chamber executive director, said Moore’s Greater Shows is one of the few companies to travel to Nebraska, and last year it was recommended by a board member to contact them. The Chamber representative traveled to Columbus to personally meet the owners and see their show/equipment, before contracting them for the 2018 Dugout Days.

Harvard’s Council members unanimously voted to make an offer to Cheryl Walker as a full-time city clerk, at a starting hourly rate of $16.50; this will be an addition to the current city clerk, Cassie King.

Council members also approved offering the city maintenance position to Chris Fishler, at a starting hourly rate of $14.
