Sutton Council has light agenda

Members of the Sutton City Council, during their Nov. 13 meeting, breezed through a rather light agenda, taking full action on just one item during the meeting.

Council members approved a new ordinance during new business items. Ordinance #379 was approved, by a unanimous vote, to officially vacate a small portion of Beach Street, just to the east of Main Street in north central Sutton, just north of the Milt and Ruth Huber home.

Clay County schools host Veterans Day Programs

A calm attention was given to speaker Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Robert West Jr. Friday morning, as West, a graduate of Shelton High School, spoke to veterans, community members and students during the Veterans Day program hosted by Sandy Creek Nov. 10.

“I challenge you all to go up to a veteran today and say thank you for your service,” West told those in attendance. “Furthermore, I challenge you to share your gratitude and thanks to each and every veteran you come across each and everyday.”

Fairfield City Council approves truck parking change Monday

Several items claimed the Fairfield City Council’s agenda Monday night, with the council approving a new resolution and discussing water meters.

Issues with semis being parked on residential streets resulted in the council approving a resolution.

Sutton named champion at SNC one act, Harvard earns 3rd at TVC; SC is 7th

Competing against nine other schools, Sutton's One Act, "Peter Pan," earned top honors during the Southern Nebraska Conference performances, held Tuesday, Nov. 14, at Superior High School.

Along with being named champion, Sutton junior Megan Fehr earned best actress.

Also competing at SNC was Sandy Creek, who performed "Wizard of the Mall," and came home with a seventh place finish.

Harvard, the hosts of the 2017 Twin Valley Conference One Act competition, performed "The Jungle Book," earning third place honors behind TVC champion Kenesaw  and the runner-up, Blue Hill, in the competition.

District competitions will see Harvard head north to Cross County High School south of Stromsburg, while Sutton and Sandy Creek head to Geneva to face competition at Fillmore Central High School.

Alzheimer’s: Putting a face to the disease

John Gustafson is one of those people you would never forget. His charismatic aura filters through his home at the Sutton Community Home, and his laugh has been known to echo throughout the halls.

Gustafson has always been this way, according to his wife, Jeanne. Despite a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s a couple of years ago, Gustafson continues to have happy days, staying as talkative as ever.

SPS Board talks to new architect, discusses 2018 projects

Jon Carlson, with Carlson West Povodra Architects, talked to the Sutton School Board about what they do as architects for schools wanting to do improvements.

His firm approaches the process by doing an existing facility analysis, identifying the school’s needs, giving a priorities assessment and looking at additional services, and then finally presenting a budget.

South Central Unified construction project showing signs of new center

Construction continues to show great strides on the new Nebraska Center for Advanced Professional Studies (NCAPS) center at Sandy Creek Public Schools’ main campus along Highway 14 in Clay County.

According to information on the website of the architectural firm that designed the NCAPS center for the South Central Nebraska Unified School District (SCNUD), the new center will offer 40,000 square feet of coactive and flexible educational environments to support the school’s linked-learning curriculum, while providing students with key moments of engagement with peers and teachers.

**Editor’s Note: This is the first of a five-part series recognizing Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. The series will highlight what Alzheimer’s is and how it effects a person. Along with a real account of a person affected by Alzheimer’s, information will also be given by a neurologist in Hastings and the staff and administration at the Sutton Community Home.**

It begins small: Forgetting keys. Not being able to put a name to a face. Then it begins to grow: Forgetting directions to a familiar area. Forgetting to get dressed. Not knowing what day it is or even the month. Then it consumes: Not recognizing your family and friends. Never being able to remember someone new. Forgetting parts about your own life.

Glenvil takes steps to grow community

Growth is a huge factor in keeping any small town or village moving forward.

On Monday, Oct. 30, Glenvil community members took their first steps in developing a strategic plan to implement that growth.

“Making one decision for small communities doesn’t work,” Sharon Hueftle, executive director of the South Central Economic Development District, said.
