A German Tale: Fleeing Russians for the safety of America

Article Image Alt Text

BY ASHLEY D. SWANSON

When Elfi Gartzke was just 4 years old, she learned how fast life can change. Growing up, she explained she had a wonderful life. Elfi resided on an acreage in Schneidemuhl, Germany, with her mother, father, three brothers, grandparents, aunt, and cousin.

They would swim in the river near their home and pick berries from the forest. They would play with the animals on the acreage. They did all of this until December 1944 when Elfi’s father was drafted as a German solider. It was uncommon for older men with families to be drafted, but at this time, there was no age limit. Elfi explained that boys as young as 12 were being drafted into the war.

Former NY Firefighter tells his 9/11 story

Article Image Alt Text

BY ASHLEY D. SWANSON

Eleven seconds.

Eleven seconds of cement dust, of tremendous sound, of pure adrenaline-laced fear.

On Sept. 11, 2001, the foundation for many New Yorkers trembled and was destroyed as two planes slammed into the Twin Towers.

Thousands of first responders sped to Ground Zero, one of which was Tim Duffy. On that fateful day, Duffy, a New York Firefighter, was at home on Staten Island, not scheduled to work, when he heard the first boom of the plane hitting the tower.

He heard the sirens, first only a few seconds and then long, drawn out sirens came.

SCH building is concerning

Article Image Alt Text

BY TORY DUNCAN

The process of building anything new has its road blocks, but in the case of the Sutton Community Home, the need is becoming more and more apparent that a new care facility for Sutton and the surrounding area is greatly needed.

As one staff member put it, “How do you put a price tag on resident healthcare and well-being?”
