Harvard’s trophy committee continues to weigh options

A special committee of the Harvard School Board—Trophy committee—discussed options to submit to the Board Monday at the special committee’s meeting.

Blake Thompson, assistant principal, said he hoped the committee could narrow the list of ideas to showcase all the school’s trophies to three to five options.

The committee was created with alumni and board members to find a solution to the issue of not having enough space to showcase all the trophies that have been won throughout school history, and to find space to display trophies and plaques future students will win. The trophies that do not fit in the display cases available now are packaged away and stored in a storage building near the school.

Incubator well-known symbol of Clay Center’s past

Article Image Alt Text

At the start of the 1900s, M.M. Johnson was coming up with a new name for his incubator business, eventually settling on Old Trusty, after his dog.

His business shot up in sales, and by the 1920s, over one million incubators had been built and sold.

Of those millions of incubators made, one now sits in the Clay County Mutual Insurance office, neatly placed in the east side of the building, adorning the infamous Old Trusty logo on the front.

L. Wayne Johnson, owner of Clay County Mutual, said he first saw the incubator at an agents office in Spalding. After some negotiating, Johnson purchased the incubator for $150, and has owned it for the past 15 years.

Sutton Board to host public meetings

A hefty price tag for future projects at Sutton Public School has prompted the school board to host two public meetings, in order to receive feedback from the public. During the Aug. 8 SPS board meeting, members of 360 Engineers presented a $3 million and a $6.2 million project estimation for updates to the school. Several board members were concerned with the total amount, but were told by the 360 Engineering presenters the million dollar projects were simply ballpark figures.

The company said they show higher numbers to schools, instead of coming in and showing the board lower figures, only to have them increase immensely and unexpectedly. This way, the schools have an idea of what projects they’re getting into.
